Religion (but not the militant type, just the go on the weekends type) is generally a good release valve for human's inherent tendencies towards magical thinking. Also P.S: China doesn't actually fight religion as a concept. It mostly represses belief systems that oppose or are generally un-cooperative with it's government. Vast majority of religions they repress are cults.
The only state that had a legitimate campaign to eradicate religion was the USSR, IIRC.
