Im so used to seeing so many countries in europe being squished together that it still boggles me to to think there was a point when continental europe was just 5 countries+the lowlands and Switzerland

And there was no eastern europe. Just Russia.

Austria-Hungary was called the prison of nations for a reason. It is interesting how there were so many people in the early 20th century prior to ww1 who thought the empires in europe were "on the wrong side of history" and would eventually be forced to change, but I doubt many would have genuinely believed that they would all be swept away in just a few years.

Has there ever been something that shook up an entire continents order of nations in such a short time span before WW1?

I wanted to say Napoleon might have but he really just installed puppets instead of redrawing map lines.

The reorganization of the HRE into the Confederation of the Rhine was the closest thing, but that was localized to Germany.

The social and economic stress from ww1 killed virtually all European empires.
Not just Austria and Russia, but also Germany and Britain (whom lost their Polish / Irish subjects respectively)

They could hardly be called countries, more like feudal holdings and subjects of colonial empires.

That map is bullshit.
Putting all the balkans (including them with Romanians and Greeks even lol wtf).

Spain is also way too homogenous. Where are the basque and Andalusians?

Another thing that boggles my mind is that Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece, only became a part of Greece again in 1912

Reddit take. Austria-Hungary provided more rights to minorities than any other country in the entire world. Yes, even the Hungarian part. If AH was the prison of nations, then every other empire was a death camp of nations.
