>be me
>bitchy Chinese kid whose mom made me play piano all the time
>had a teacher and everything
>had to learn (or at least listen to) the whole classical piano repertoire and everything
>every spring she'd have some recital for all her students
>it was usually at this episcopal church in some rich suburb (about as rich as mine, but whiter)
>pull in at like 5:00 pm in an itchy suit with my mom
>have to walk through the back of the church, where all the sunday school / ccd / whatever they have classrooms are, to get from the parking lot to the main chapel where the piano and pews are
>see a bunch of older white girls walking around having youth group
>much hotter than any of the normies at my "diverse" public school
>or even my chinese church (yes, they have those... and mine was nondenomibaptist)

never tried to talk to / interact with any of them, but i simply couldn't stop catching glances of them before the recital, during bathroom breaks, and after the recital

don't think that's where i developed a thing for white girls, but it was definitely a contributor if not an outright source

also read their hymnals in the pews cuz i was bored, and they had a whole bunch of stuff my church's chinese-english hymnals lacked, like plainchant and "the eucharist"

thought they were more christian than my stupid chinese church at the time, but later found out they were the least christian of all christians

They’re at the top of the economic caste heap for white Christian denominations but also one of the most woke outside of Unitarians. For “whitest” you’d probably want some Pentecostal church in Appalachia.

Latinx are getting Pentecostalpilled big time
I’ve never even heard of a Unitarian Universalist that was not some white upper middle class libtard. Their congregations are probably whiter than a klan rally

I was going to add to my comment that the charismatic movement was bigly influenced by the emotional fervor of African American Christianity. That church I had in mind up some Kentucky holler might be racially white but it’s the same vibe as some Puerto Rican storefront church in the Bronx or black Holiness church in Houston.

What's making Latin Americans leaving the Catholic church and converting to Protestant denominations? Like it's overall easier for me to imagine Christian -> atheist or even Christian -> Muslim, than Christian -> other flavor of Christian.

Unless it's "obviously skeevy abusive radical cult" -> "real Christianity", but pretty sure Protestantism is more prone to cult formation than the "Catholic" or universal church.

As for my own situation, I doubt Chinese Protestantism is a cult, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

For me it was largely a family thing, like how I grew up.

Like my mom and aunt were into it, my entire mom's side of the family was into it, and most of mom's friend group was christian to some extent.

Even several Chinese family members, despite China having more freedom of religion.

So yeah, the whole ordeal was cognitively dissonant AF, but Christianity sort of WAS my "native religion".

And there I was drilled on how worshipping Chinese or Greco-Roman deities was fucking wrong and could send you to hell if you didn't accept the Lord Jesus as your personal savior; no syncretism allowed.

And I think they're sorta right even tho adhering to traditional Chinese folk religion would be more in line with my ethnicity and heritage

Like Christianity feels like a more stable faith with a more stable canon and creed

A lot of Chinese folk religion just elevates random generals and inventors to gods for no reason and offers like physical offerings of goods or incense to them, and I've gone to Chinese temples so I know what they're like.

The Chinese have a more "buffet" approach to religion and spirituality, it seems.

Some of it is a cargo cult, especially with “prosperity gospel” sects. Rather than be poor humble Roman Catholic sheep, you’ll be showered with U.S. style consoomer goods if you believe hard enough. Sometimes it’s a political reaction to Catholic liberation theology with right wingers drawn to right leaning churches. Then there’s the spectacle and fervor of Pentecostalism, with wild music, faith healing and flamboyant preachers, as opposed to a staid mass. The Catholic Church is stepping up their game to compete, adding more charismatic elements to their worship.

I like being Episcopalian since I can speak Latin in church without falling into the papist heresy and at the same time maintaining the church's ancient traditions

As a Republic of China loyalist, I also appreciate that China is a diocese of our church.

My experience is that Latinos tend to become Eastern Orthodox or various traditions of Buddhism, usually very scholastic ones like dual practice Chinese Buddhism or Tibetan . They don't quite hate Catholicism either counter to the pop narrative. I live in a predominantly Hispanic place.

It is a social capital thing. Historically, Episcolpian's had a lot of political and economic capital and that rubbed off on them. They are also known for being accepting which makes them attractive, they have a wide understanding of theology too making them open for many unlike ssomething like the reformed christian traditions or eastern orthodox.

It could be a local thing but it is pretty clearly the case where I live. Basically, only poor hispanics convert to fringe protestant traditions, we are talking the Papacy of Bob type stuff. Your everdyay person though tends to identify as catholic but see practice as private. However, when they do convert it is Eastern Orthodox, the most common ones near me convert to Antiochian Orthodox but there are a lot of Buddhists. It is also not pop Buddhism or western secular stuff, It is actual attending a temple with Chinese, Vietnamese or in the case of Tibetan Buddhists, some Indonesians.

They’re still around but slowly dying off like every other boomer thing, and younger cons aren’t buying into the goofy Christian Zionism. The tradcath/theobro faction seems to be growing with examples like J. D. Vance. I wonder if all the orthobros will ever have much political influence?

Can you legally be exmuslim if you're a Saudi Arabian citizen, even if physically residing outside of Saudi Arabia?

I'd be really discreet about anything that could be construed as "apostasy" if I were in that position with how dogshit the job market and acceptance of foreigners / visa holders in the US is these days.

Because if I can't find anything, I'd have to go back lol. At least that's what happens to a lot of Indian and Chinese visa students.

Legally, no, as if you proclaimed or posted about it. They just don't tell anyone anything and do their thing. These dudes are engineers and I imagine they aren't too worried about getting a job. A common thing exmuslism do is just come out when they are safe and away from family and their country of origin. The few I have talked to keep down low. I knew one Pakistani who left and totally cut off their family, left Islam and just became an atheist after going getting a good job in Mexico.

What’s your sample size on this? Like 3?
In the past 30 years evangelicals have gone from like 1% of the Latinx population to 20%. Brazil and Centroamerica are probably going to be majority evangelical in our lifetime.
