I think the theory that he was from the region of now Pakistan, Afghanistan or Iran makes a lot of sense if you consider how racially ambiguous he seemed to people: He passed as black, a Spaniard, a Latino and white. If you have never seen people from that part of the world you would have a really hard time placing them on the spectrum of the 3 racial groups Americans were familiar with. His constant name changes and moving around just suggests to me that he was a lot more involved in crime than we know of. He was a chameleon, a manipulator, a pathological liar and eventually cult leader, that screams serial conman and fraudster to me who had to skip town after a few months or years every time.
