How come Italians weren’t considered white by Americans until the 1950's, even though Rome was the birth place of modern Western Civilization and Hitler believed Italians were honorary Aryan whites?

Was it because of their mixed race shit skin or their Catholicism?

Less that they weren't white and more that they were weird foreigners with funny names associated with the lower class and crime. Without the mafia Italians likely would have been accepted far faster.

I encourage you to now name every Italian sentenced for breaking the anti-miscegenation laws in the US. Surely there were some cases, right? You wouldn't just just asspull this because you are a fucking retard... right?

Anglo/WASP autism, though Catholicism had a big role as well. Its one of the reasons why the Irish, literally some of the palest people on the planet, were looked down for so long for example. They got their whiteness card when it became more politically convenient for them to do so.

the modern understanding of race is a product of extreme puritan schizophrenia from the 18th century

This question isn't grounded in reality, since US immigration law explicitly excluded non-whites from citizenship from the first naturalization law in 1790 until the 1965 immigration act, therefore Italians must have been considered White by Americans, otherwise they would not have been allowed to immigrate. There were legal cases where high caste Indians demanded to be considered white due to their Aryan ancestry but were denied by the Supreme Court and deported, so it isn't like this wasn't an active field of contention. Tragically, Jews were also considered white, causing the eventual downfall of the United States.
