Along with the Reconquista they're some of the only successful crusades (yes Lithuania survived but they became devout Catholics) and everything about the setting is so cinematic. LWers are maybe a bit sensitive about it because le settler colonialism while RWers get in a fit about it because you have two WHITE peoples butchering each other (wow oh my GOD so horrible I wonder what was going on in the rest of medieval Europe, what Antiquity was about, what was going on constantly pre-1945, and what's still going on in Ukraine). Both perspectives are so amazing whether the Germans with their stark beautiful imposing brick castles/cathedrals or the indigenous pagans fighting in their hillforts and ambushing from the woods. The nature would be so amazing and everything about both sides, about everyone involved, is so inexpressibly fascinating with the Northern Crusades it is such a shame that nobody ever talks about them (understandably so from the perspective of America/England but still c'mon this is cool stuff).

Both sides were also so viscerally brutal and fanatic in your own gods - whether the pagans doing actual human sacrifice by burning captives alive to satisfy bloodthirsty gods - or the crusaders exterminating villages and killing enemies to absolve their sins. It's like a human sacrifice *for* Jesus which would be so cool to observe in a film series.

The purpose was a establish a Crusader stronghold against the tartar invaders, the Balts and Slavonians were in the way and had to be subjugated in order to strengthen the Order's position. The Poles, Tartars, and Rus most strangely rejected the protection of the knights for the lash of the Tartar, inviting them into their lands to fight against the West, suffering the Asiatic barbarism ever since.

Your threads are very funny but they only became serious about Russia and the Tatars as a compromise *after* Lithuania converted since there were no pagans left, the Teutonics desperately needed a reason for their existence, and there were hopes that a common goal would unify Poland, Lithuania, and the Order. Of course this failed and so the Russian/Tatar theater was a nothingburger they mostly just traded.

The thing is that the Order become a HRE hand to annex vast swathes of land from the Slavs and others folks there, they received orders directly from the Holy see or the HRE emperor and literally replaced a good bunch of the natives with their own, funny enough much of the crusades there are Saxons who the paganlarpers and charlemagne talk so much here, in the end they become one of the most faithful christians, but there is tons of different German tribes there.
