Doesn't the acknowledgment of negative numbers, even if considered absurd, prove the Greeks invented it first? Also you do not need the formal modern notation of "negative numbers" to use the concept. An architect making measurements below the surface of the ground could just say "10 cubits underground" rather than "-10 cubits" and it makes no difference mathematically. Or a money lender has a client who lent him 5000 denarii and now wants to borrow 8000, he will say the client is "3000 in debt".
