Lets look at the isle of the "Hispaniola"
In one hand we have the haitians, the poorest people in the americas, with a pib per capita of 1000 dollars, and in the other we have the dominican republic, a relatively good country, atleast in economy with a pib per capita of 10,000 dollars.
What was the difference? The westernization.
The french barely tried to educate the haitian negroes, while the spaniards did educate them for around 200 years and often mixed with them since they considered them equal.
When haiti got its independence they had the same mentality than any other tribe of africa, while the dominicans had already a western civilized mindset.

Nearly every newly independent African democracy was overthrown within years. Both European socialists and opportunists in Africa wanted independence right away in the middle of the cold war without a gradual transition period where these new countries build up a civil service and national army as India had done. Ostensibly because they believed this to be a conspiracy to keep them a colony indefinitely. The result was decades of war and instability that basically continues to this day.

Literally 100s of millions of Africans live lives in poverty, countless die pointlessly of easily cured infectious disease, a good number in war, countless women and girls are raped, AIDs is epidemic, all because of this naivety.

Power vacuums cause wars, that's the story in a nutshell. Colonial administrations left, it was unclear who holds what power, so naturally power brokers started fighting to sort it out. Once this was done and balance of power was established things began improving. Africa has much less conflict and better economy and infrastructure now than during the Cold War.

Not very much. Jamaica is >90% SSA. Don't know all that much about the others to be fair but that's because they really are just tiny islands.

What I'm saying is that these are not really self-standing nations that function in the same way as regular ones. Even the ones that are technically politically independent are certainly just completely in some other country's economic and cultural orbit.
