Why is killing people for secular reasons like money or land "better" than killing people for religion? I've always found this double standard bizarre whether with posters here or European thought between the 1700's to 1960's. This is especially jarring with colonialism - "Oh the natives aren't being religiously persecuted they're just getting exterminated and enslaved for land." Wtf??? What difference does it make?

I don't even need to talk about modern wars. And the way premodern warfare (barring maybe the 18th century kinda but even that's a stretch) was fought was consistent. You burn down villages and farms, terrorize the local populace with your degenerate soldiers and make life hell for them, capture fortified strongholds, and try to force your will on the other depending on both of your relative strength. This was consistently done for even things as "trivial" and "secular" as succession crises between two factions with the same exact religion and culture.
