I'd really like to understand the meaning behind the lyrics of the song Veracruz by Warren Zevon, in both the historical sense and the historiographical sense, but I'm really pretty spotty on most South American history beyond some vague notions and some hyper-specific Contra stuff.

Where would you recommend I start? I want to understand the historical events he's describing, obviously, but also the viewpoint he's taking, the milieu he's taking it in, and the changes in consensus and understanding since he took it. Any recommended reading is appreciated, and any insight you might have into the subject is too!

I'll take a stab at both of these
>I thought it was Marias voice
He's banging some chick, Maria. Or a reference to the virgin mother.
>from the Land of the Midnight Sun
Roland was born in northern Scandinavia, north of the Polar Circle
>that son-of-a-bitch Van Owen
the dutch are assholes
>En Veracruz moriré
Maria will return one day and kick out those yankee sons-of-a-bitches

That's about all I got, enjoy every sandwitch
