You'll go back in time and quickly realize how much you fucked up when you can't find the washing machine and realize washing your clothes and drying them is literally going to take all day and require moving multiple gallons of water from the well that's over a mile away.

Not always, in any case you still had to transfer the water from the river to a washtub of some kind, you wouldn't really want to wash your clothes directly in the river itself if you could help it because rivers carry a lot of debris that can get caught in your clothes
