This. USA is more rich thanks to their more progressive liberal society. It's pretty clear from the correlation. Even within the US, more progressive liberal areas are also more rich.

Portugal didn't have long term goals with Brazil. They would build enough to extract as much resources as possible and that was it. That only changed when Napoleon threatened Portugal directly and their crown fled to Brazil, turning Rio de Janeiro into the capital of the Portuguese Empire. That's when they actually started building universities and such. I am not a knower of American history but I imagine they had a change of attitude much sooner.
