99% of people got married between the ages of 18-23, they had sex on their wedding night for the first time, both of them virgins, and would move into their new house shortly afterwards, of which they would live together for the rest of their life.
They got a job similarly young, and would work at that job for their entire life.
There was no crime, you knew your neighbours and all of them were decent people.
There were no drugs of any kind.
Sure there were exceptions, there are always exceptions, but for the vast vast majority of people that lived ordinary lives, they never encountered these exceptions and never even knew they existed.
The only real downside is that, no matter what our life conditions are, whether we are rich kings or starving children, we grow accustomed to it and it become standard.
This way of life which was so free of struggle and yet so void of glory, become a sort of mental poison for many.
Mundanity, they could no longer see the beautiful safety, simplicity, and stability of their life, they could only see monotony and stagnation.
