>>17861667Mandeans believe that John the Baptist is the Messiah and last of the seven prophets sent to mankind: Adam, Seth, Enosh, Enoch, Noah, Shem, and Aram. They believe that prophecy culminated in John the Baptist though. Not unlike in Pseudo-Clementine where the seven prophets are Adam, Seth, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses, with prophecy culminating in Jesus Chirst.
They believe that John the Baptist was a messenger of Hayyi Rabba, the great God of Mandaeism who dwells in light. They believe that he is the reincarnation of the past prophets, but especially of Enosh. They consider Enosh identical with the spiritual Christ. Thus the Christ, for the Mandeans, rested within John the Baptist and not Jesus of Nazareth.
They believe that Jesus was an opponent of John who led people away from him. Nonetheless, they don't necessarily think Jesus was evil, or even ignorant, but still in error. He is not regarded as a prophet by the Mandeans. However he is believed to be the son of Mary, who was a Mandean priestess and is revered within Mandean sacred texts.
They position their religion in opposition to the Temple system of Israel, and they believe the world was made by a lower demiurge named Ptahil. They believe the Holy Spirit of Judaism and Christianity, whom they call Ruha, is an evil being.
Curiously they call their priests Nasoreans, though sometimes the term is used to refer to Mandeans both priest and lay people alike. They also use a particular variation of the cross as their symbol but they attach an entirely different meaning to it than what is attached to it in Christianity.
