There was also a special noble title for direct descendants of Confucius. They were given the title Duke of Yansheng. If China had had the equivalent of the Meiji Restoration, then these two families were the leading candidates to become emperor.
Personally, I think elevating a Duke of Yansheng to emperor would have been the better choice. The Ming pretenders were comically poor and marginalized, while the descendants of Confucius had something resembling a base of power and authority.
