>society should treat commies the way they treat fascistsThey're not really analogous. Communism left a much longer and more varied intellectual tradition in its wake which makes it harder to erase. Fascism lasted, basically, a generation, before it and most of its true believers were extinguished.
It's also worth noting that Western Communists themselves were useful assets against Soviet Communism during the Cold War. A lot of their writing from this time touched on how much of a disaster the USSR was and why Western leftists should avoid making those same mistakes.
