God is being metaphorical with us. The same way He was metaphorical with the prophets of olde when He'd tell them to go and do some sort of task, and then explain to them why He told them to do it. And it would usually be a message warning the Israelites of what God was about to do to them or some other nation.

That asteroid verse kinda fits the bill. Humanity has been seeing asteroids whizz through the atmosphere since as far back as the 1300's, and beyond that. I wonder if folks back then ever thought of the 'cast the first stone' verse whenever they'd see an asteroid. It's literally God showing us His mercy whenever a website reports one coming past earth. He misses on purpose. But He never misses when He decides to get serious.
