The funny thing is that Lincoln genuinely had no intention of unleashing radical abolitionism on the American people, but he was so dedicated to his economic and political program that he was willing to flirt with it to win the war. At least for other great centralizers like Wilson and Roosevelt they achieved what they set out to do, Lincoln's chief legacy, becoming a "civil rights" icon, was something he himself would acknowledge as a disaster.
