A simplified answer is that it pertains to questions about the nature of reality outside the scope of physics as a science, hence the name being "beyond physics".

"Meta" means "about", not "above" or "beyond". It translates to "about reality". It is the study of what reality is and, as importantly, what it isn't. Asking a metaphysical question is thus asking a question about reality. It is a philosophical step one must take to make sense of the world and his own life within it. The other two steps are epistemology and axiom. It basically goes like this.

1. Metaphysics: What is reality? What is and isn't real?
Materialism = Reality exists as it is and is independent from man's mind. If a tree falls in the forest, it makes a sound even if nobody experiences it.
Phenomenalism = Reality exists as a product of man's mind. (example= Plato says the world of forms exists where the perfect version of every concept exists, like the perfect chair or the perfect justice).
Asking whether the soul exists is a metaphysical question.

2. Epistemology - How can man know reality?
Scientific method = Man can know the truth by using his senses and his mind to experience reality. He can use experiments to decide if water boils at a certain degree of heat by measuring it independent from his own mind (thermometer).
Mysticism = Reality is taught to man by a higher power / the spirits, and that man must then tell the rest what is real and what isn't (a philosopher king as Plato put it).
Asking how we could discover if the soul exists is an epistemological question.

3. Axiom - How can man live a good life?
This question is pretty derivative from the above points. Namely, if you think reality is what it is, there is no reason to listen to the preacher for how to live your life. It is your life and you decide according to your ideas and dreams. Otherwise you are dependent on the mystic to tell you whatever he wants you to believe. In the case of the Pope, that means living a catholic life. In the case of most other cult leaders that means giving him unfettered access your wife, daughter and bank account.
