Modern Iraqis have nothing to do with the ancient Mesopotamians. Instead of speaking Akkadian, they speak Arabic. Instead of worshipping their native gods, they instead follow Islam. Instead of being culturally Mesopotamian, they are instead culturally Arab.
Assyrians are the only group with any real ties to ancient Mesopotamia, and even then they speak Aramaic instead of Akkadian and they follow Christianity instead of their native gods.
Real Mesopotamian civilization died even before Christianity became the state religion of Rome.

Half of Europe, most of Subsaharan Africa, and all of the Americas speak a language descended from Latin while following a Roman religion, doesn't mean that these places aren't full of distinct cultures with wildly different histories than just "oh we're Roman."
