Elias Syriani was the 38th person executed by North Carolina since 1976. He murdered his wife Teresa in 1990 in an argument and became one of the oldest people executed in the United States in the post-Furman era. Syriani was born to a Christian Arab family in Jerusalem, Mandate Palestine on January 7, 1938, one of six siblings. When he was 12 years old, Israeli authorities jailed his father, causing the latter to have a mental and physical breakdown that led to his early death. Elias was forced to go to work early and leave school as a result. The Syrianis moved to Jordan and Elias after his 18th birthday enlisted in the Jordanian army which he served in until 1965. After his military stint, he spent some time as a machinist and as a radio broadcaster.
In 1974 Syriani, by then in his mid-30s, decided he could afford to marry. He met 24 year old Teresa Yousef through a mutual friend; she was living in the United States and they corresponded and exchanged photos for three months before she flew to Jordan to tie the knot. The couple moved to the US and eventually had four children; Rose, John, Sarah, and Janet. They initially settled in Washington D.C. where Elias worked at a restaurant and learned English at night and then they moved to Chicago where he worked as a machinist for Protective Door. The company folded during the early 1980s economic recession and Syriani got another job at Kerr Glass Manufacturing. He stayed there until that employer went out of business in 1986 and moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina where he began working for Midland Machine Co.
Teresa had worked at a Woolworth's when they first moved to the US, but after their first child arrived she became a stay-at-home mother. For the couple's first decade of marriage, she dressed in traditional Middle Eastern clothing and adhered to her homeland's strict cultural norms. They spoke Arabic at home and their marriage appeared to be entirely amicable with the two only having trivial disagreements. Elias always made sure to call home when he was away on a business trip and ask how everyone was doing.
After moving to Charlotte, Teresa announced that she wanted to go back to working. Elias accepted and bought her a second car for her own use. She was employed at a restaurant for three months and then began working at a gas station. The trouble began here when Teresa, after over a decade in America, apparently felt confident enough to fully assimilate into her adopted home and began dressing in normal American clothing, wearing makeup, and accumulating a circle of female friends. Her husband did not like this and argued with her over it. For one week in June 1988 Teresa and the children stayed at a battered women's shelter before going to live with her sister in New Jersey, where they stayed a month before returning home.
By 1990 their arguments started escalating. Teresa complained that Elias let the kids eat junk food instead of properly nourishing meals. The arguments culminated in him grabbing his wife's throat and yelling that he would kill her. He also disciplined the kids harshly; for example they had a strict curfew of 5:00 PM. When their eldest daughter Rose accidentally scratched the paint on her father's new van, he grabbed and kicked her in the driveway as neighbors watched from across the street. Eventually Teresa managed to separate the two. Elias told his wife he'd kill her if she ever left him.
Teresa wanted to divorce Elias and got a restraining order from a Charlotte judge demanding that he move out of their house and avoid any contact with her and the children. They stayed at a motel until getting the restraining order. Elias packed his clothes and checked into a hotel room. He came back to the neighborhood a few times; once he saw their 10 year old son John skateboarding outside and asked if he could talk to his mother. John told him she wasn't home. Another time he drove up to the house and asked John if Teresa could give him a small portable TV they had for his hotel room as he had no TV set in there. She refused. On July 27, Syriani left work and saw John hanging around outside the gas station where his mother worked. He asked if he could take the boy out to lunch, but Teresa refused. He left and returned to his motel room.
At 8:00 PM on the 28th he drove to a supermarket near the gas station. Teresa did not drive by and he thought she must still be at work. Syriani drove up to his wife's house and found that she wasn't there. He waited for her to come back from work and then blocked the driveway with his van. Syriani got out, walked over to Teresa's car, and stabbed her 28 times with a screwdriver as John sat in the passenger seat. The boy tried to stop his father with no luck. He ran for it and told his 13 year old sister Rose. They went to a friend's house, came back, and found that he was still in the car hacking away at their mother. He finally stopped and drove off.
Teresa was still alive as he went to a fire station to get some cuts and scratches treated, telling the firemen that his wife attacked him. He was arrested shortly afterward. Teresa was taken into the Carolinas Medical Center in the early morning hours of July 29. She was covered in blood and had cuts to her arm, right side, and face and complained of being in pain. Nurses inserted a breathing tube as she had difficulty with respiration. Teresa hoped to file legal action against her husband but finally succumbed to her injuries on August 22. An autopsy of her body found numerous now mostly healed wounds to her cheek, neck, mouth, right hand, and arm. Some had been sutured by doctors. Her jaw was broken and she had lost several teeth. The ultimate cause of death was a three inch puncture to the right temple that went into the brain, affecting the right temporal lobe and basal ganglia. It would have taken considerable force to penetrate an adult human skull this way. The screwdriver Elias used in the attack was a tool he normally carried with him for work; it was never found.
Syriani was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; after Teresa died, it was upgraded to capital murder. At his trial, he insisted he was merely defending himself from his wife and that he had only hit her back a handful of times in almost 16 years of marriage. This was contradicted by the children's testimony about his repeated abusive, violent behavior. John could remember various instances of him hitting their mother, breaking objects in a fit of anger, and calling her a whore. Rose claimed they argued constantly back when they lived in Illinois. Elias denied that he beat and kicked his daughter for scratching the paint on his van, saying he only spanked her that one time and it was the first time he'd ever done that.
One of his co-workers David Stevens testified and said they'd been colleagues at Kerr Glass back in the early '80s and that he was a dependable worker. After the company closed in '86, Stevens followed Syriani to Charlotte and they both began working at Midland Machine. He didn't see any signs of Syriani not getting along with his family and they were entirely normal people as far as he could tell. On cross-examination, however, Stephens admitted that he'd tried to talk the managers at Midland Machine out of hiring Syriani because he had an awful temper and scared his co-workers.
Also testifying was his former supervisor at Protective Door, Harold Linn, who had hired Syriani in 1977 and considered him an excellent worker, one of the best at the plant. Linn had since retired and moved to North Carolina but he remained friends with the Syrianis and respected Elias as an immigrant who'd come to America knowing only a few words of English and had apparently achieved the American dream since. He thought Elias's children were well-behaved and "really smart" and that all of them were loved, wanted, and properly cared for. Under cross examination, Linn would not budge from his assessment of Syriani and maintained that he'd only seen a good, hard-working, and devoted family man.
Elias's sister Odett testified next; she took in the children after their mother's death and lived in Chicago with them. As was standard Middle Eastern custom, their marriage had been an arranged one, she explained. During various times when she visited the family over the years, she noticed nothing amiss. Elias took the stand in his own defense to go over his life since childhood and insisted his marriage was a happy one. He said he had no intention of brutally stabbing her with a screwdriver and could barely recall the incident. He was sure he'd only stabbed her three or four times.
The jury ultimately found him guilt of first degree murder with a deadly weapon and he was sentenced to death. The appeals process dragged on, his attorneys arguing that he was a model prisoner and had been brought up in an entirely different culture and after a last attempt to get a stay of execution, Syriani was executed by lethal injection in North Carolina's Central Prison on November 18, 2005 at the age of 67. His children had since come to forgive him although none of them attended the execution.
North Carolina executed five more people over the next nine months but suspended capital punishment following the controversial execution of Samuel Flippen in August 2006 over doubts as to his guilt in the murder of his 2 year old stepdaughter in 1994. As of 2025 the Tarheel State has yet to execute another person.

The crimes allegedly began when the victim was six years old.[46] He was charged with 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with minors: 15 in Ingham County and seven in neighboring Eaton County. The allegations asserted that Nassar had molested seven girls under the guise of providing legitimate medical treatment, both at his home and at a clinic on the MSU campus.[47] Bail was set at $1 million, and Nassar was released from jail the same day after posting bond.[48] On December 8, 2016, he was arraigned when he pleaded not guilty to all charges.[49] He remained free on bail until he was arrested after the FBI had found more than 37,000 images of child pornography and a video of Nassar molesting underage girls. He was denied bail and ordered to remain in federal prison.[50]>On April 6, 2017, his medical license was revoked for three years.[51]>On July 11, 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography in 2004, possession of pornographic images of children dating from 2004 to 2016, and tampering with evidence by destroying and concealing the images.
