To be fair, most of the territory United States acquired from Mexico through conquest was ungovernable from Mexico City.

Spain and Mexico barely defended those territories, in retrospect it's pretty obvious neither of them really gave a shit. States like California were won without a real fight, just a series of non-battles where Americans show up to a fort and Mexicans flee and repeat for a couple of months. Even most native Tejanos were on the side of the Americans during the Revolution and this was the closest Mexico ever came to putting up a real fight. The entire territory was woefully underpopulated before Americans settled it,

This is ultimately why American won. They bothered to put people on the land. Mexico never did. They had like one outpost for a 1000 square mile region with double digit numbers of people claiming it home at most.

Most of the territory USA took from mexico was comanche and apache, both of them often raided the mexican mestizo towns in New Mexico.
