Hitler prefered alliances out of personal convenience moreso than mutual benefit. The Axis had basically nothing in common with eachother culturally or geographically. His alliance with Japan was just an attempt to corner the Russians for example, but Japan already had their own personal ambitions in the Pacific. It was simply never going to work.

It was indeed a big gamble. Nobody knew anything about the Soviets. Their system was unheard of in history. It could be just a house of cards waiting to collapse in which case it would be smart to invade sooner than later, or it could be a superhuman behemoth threatening Europe with it's brutal, efficient system.
