Apparently they were all high on a form of LSD that is produced by a certain species of mold and they all ate old food with said mold growing on it. That's the theory I've heard anyways

People are very suggestible, and tend to imitate what other people are doing. One person starts to clap, a few more join in and soon everyone is clapping. Even if it makes no sense you don't want to be the odd man out. A curious thing happens when you apply this to religion.

After experiencing akatixia, i believe it could be something like that, perhaps born from moldy bread like [>>17871070] says. Akatixia is a very disturbing state where you literally can't state still.
