I think the bigger crime the Saudis committed was razing all the historical tombs of the Islamic religious figures. They're all unmarked graves now. It would be one thing if they were at least consistent about it since they say tombs are against Islam, but they didn't have the courage to also raze the tomb of the Prophet. I note also that the tombs they razed were those of Shia figures, but they decided to spare the tombs of Sunni figures, which makes the destruction of history committed here seem even more petty and meaningless
>>17888030
They razed all the religious buildings of significance because the very existence of most religious buildings of significance goes against Saudi/Wahabbi doctrine. If they razed the significant buildings then they certainly won't be building any themselves

Yes they absolutely are, but you realize the medieval caliphates were hardly Islamic right? The Umayyad caliphate which you might have been thinking of is particularly infamous amongst Muslims since it bolstered its rule by killing the Prophet's surviving family members and descendants

Yes, the Prophet's family including his grandchildren have religious significance in Islam, and for some sects this significance extends also to some of his great-grandchildren. Evangelicals/Protestants also love Jews despite them betraying Christ. Never understood that. Interestingly Salafis also venerate some of the early rebels in Islam that attacked their own Islamic caliphates, since the caliphate was led at that time by one of the central figures in the Shia sect. I wonder why there are all these parallels between Protestants and Salafis

There are agencies that arrange accommodation and travel at prices when they’re cheap, everyone contributes a few hundred dollars for the entire trip, food and lodging. They’re pretty terrible though and you’ll be stuck with 20 people groups that all look like homeless faggots.

Thing is though a lot of Muslims consider a pilgrimage to Mecca as a way to remove all your sins and start a clean slate so chances are you’ll probably be lodging with some fucked up people so any Muslim will reckoned you take those group trips along with friends or family.

It is really ironic, most holy site in Islam is just one big tourist trap with predatory hotels.

Saudis have extremely strict dress codes and they bounce back between banning driving for women and unbanning it, it’s a cycle with that repeats with that specific law whenever someone wants to appease the more religious sects.

As for smoking, drinking and drugs, very specific locations in SA allows these things to pass by without punishment, for example the Khobar area is filled with Russian/ukrainian prostitutes, drugs and alcohol and the authorities let it slip because it’s a tourist location that makes a lot of money.

But in the south part of the country, punishments are way strict and just dealing with drugs will have you beheaded and if your caught as a prostitute there’s female officers that will beat the shit out of them (though it can get more fucked up than that since every piece of shit Saudi that rapes a woman can falsely claim she’s a prostitute as a way to escape punishment and blame the woman).

Overall Saudi Arabia as a country is a clusterfuck that’s only being tied to together because of the iron grip the ruling family has.

There’s strong corruption and complex history to the building of hotels and resorts around Mecca, the previous King of Saudi Arabia allowed a lot of government and ministry entities to take bribes and build whatever they want with zero restrictions and it led to a massive boom in construction and projects that never got completed even after 12 years. It’s why when the previous King died a shit ton of arrests took place after the political backing was stopped. It is so ironic how the Mecca is just a tool even though Muslims claim to be the most pious.

>I wonder why there are all these parallels between Protestants and Salafis
The emergence of Salafism is basically the Islamic Reformation happening.
>Radical fundamentalist opposed to the mainstream tradition of their faith (Catholicism, Sufism) arises and due to political support becomes founder of a major tradition
>Ideology takes power from religious authorities and grants it to the ruler (Protestant rulers in Europe ascending over the Pope, Salafi instruction to obey the ruler)
>Both Protestantism and Salafism are tied to capitalism (Protestant Europe is where capitalism developed, Salafism is basically the most powerful anti-socialist ideology ever invented, has stymied such movements across the Muslim world)
Heck, even the hollowing out of Protestantism towards atheism we saw in Northern Europe is beginning to repeat in places like Saudi. My hypothesis is that it's a sort of cultural convergent evolution due to the pressures of early capitalism, under which both Protestantism and Salafism emerged. In any case, Salafism is basically the most powerful ideology on Earth right now, and the 2000s/2100s will be dominated by how it plays out.

If you aren't willing to help alleviate the suffering of starving children you are the problem. There is nothing about the natural world that necessitates we cannot have a society where nobody starves.
>Humans have had the technology to destroy entire cities a few statues were not the issue
That's the point you absolute moron it's just a response to infuriate those who believe statues are worth more than human lives. Of course they had the technology, who the fuck carved it out of stone in the first place? They could have carved it down even further until there was nothing but rubble. The whole point was to make it as disturbing as possible which is why they shot at it and all that

>It is really ironic, most holy site in Islam is just one big tourist trap with predatory hotels.
Muslim traders / pirates were a whole thing. I think this whole notion that Islam and modern capitalism don't mix is totally wrong. Or just look at the UAE. Also suspect that the ISIS stuff is on its way out (it's becoming more of an African thing) and a sort of (actually more traditional) "business Islam" is taking over.

Some dislike it because it was built on a Turkish imperial fortress, but other than that, I think the reviews are generally positive.
