Neanderthals were extremely territorial, didn't like to travel, and basically hated to interact with foreign groups. There were two neanderthal communities living at opposite ends of a mountain valley in Swizterland, they literally lived like 25-30km away from one another, and in 5,000 years they hadn't interbred even once. Well thanks for lecturing me. I certainly did not know bows were older than the arrival to Europe.

Homo Sapiens had better hand-eye coordination and thus could throw things more accurately at greater distances, which they incorporated into their hunting practices allowing them to take a much wider variety of game. This not only allowed their populations to increase, but also allowed them to spread to more types of environments because they weren't as dependent on specific game animals for sustenance as other hominids. It also meant that when Homo Sapiens did confront other hominids they had the advantage: they were more numerous, and had superior technology / tactics with ranged weapons.

Neanderthals seem to have interbred with Homo Sapiens to a high degree in Eurasia, so it probably wasn't a completely contentious coexistence, but it was not a coexistence which favored the Neanderthal.

Neanderthals never invented the bow & arrow, they didn't even invent the spear thrower, forcing them to hunt prey via night ambush with simple stabbing spears. They never invented the needle, thus their "clothes" were just animal hides draped over their shoulders and they never domesticated dogs.

There was also an article I read years back about a Neanderthal archeological dig alongside a river and while some salmon bones were found in trash middens showing that they did eat and like fish, the odd sporadic consumption when salmon are known to run in the same river every year at round about the same time, suggests Neanderthals didn't have a good grasp of time.

Life just kinda happened to them and they didn't think any more about it.
