Believing your morals are superior is unavoidable... otherwise you wouldn't hold them. The trap is refusing to question them. Moral humility ("I think X is right, but I could be wrong") beats smug absolutism. Even "tolerance" becomes hypocritical if you dismiss all dissent as immoral.

It is unavoidable only if you assume that you have perfect knowledge and understanding of your morals and that of others, that you can make no mistakes, etc. In reality you don't, so your best bet is a guess. Not recognizing that is immoral.
