By its very nature, the military-industrial complex has always been a parasite on society. That parasitism requires division, distraction, competition, conflict, and war—“peace dividends” will always be too meager for the defense industry’s liking. And as long as war dominates the American political landscape, the real solutions to genuine human need—a healthy environment, good healthcare, strong communities, safe water, nutritious food, quality education, safe roads, reliable public transport—will remain elusive. The war system precludes solutions, even those of a minimal and local nature.
