The art style was probably supposed to be realistic. Traditional Egyptian art depicted idealized figures who basically looked alike apart from differing dresses and hairstyles.

So when he decided to change it up, it went to the other extreme, with cartoonishly exaggerated features, hence the long head. Also his depictions show him as skinnyfat, which was probably accurate given the lifestyle of pharaos.
