I'm sure he's not an actual option, and just something to like from afar, but on the other hand you never really know, something could happen.

Are you gay and does he know? Maybe you can start doing nice little things for him, just small gestures. Maybe bring him (and his sons) some baked goods or some other sort of treat? Offer to help him out if needs anything. Just stuff like that.

If he feels awkward about it, then hopefully he'll show it and you'll know to back off, and that he's not interested, then it was just you being nice, so no harm no foul.
