That is pretty much agreed upon by everyone. Letting Shatner direct it was a massive mistake.

>Letting Shatner direct

I'm sure he must have insisted on it in his contract after they let Nimoy direct two of the movies. I think shatner was going for a humor filled movie like the beloved humorous episodes of the original show like trouble with tribbles but he failed miserably and all of that campfire humor was cringe.

Shatner loyalist reporting for duty.
I think it would have been bad with any director. He didn't write the script or the general concept (correct me if I am wrong about this). The director can only be held responsible for blocking, acting style, delivery, and things like that.
The problem with the movie in my opinion is that it is a retread of so many TOS episodes where they meet an ascended super alien that is the source of a real mythology or religion, and that its version of this is far worse than any of the previous. There are also problems with characterization, such as Spock allowing a criminal to seize a starship, simply because it is a family member which is illogical. A ST hijacking movie could have been great if it was about politics and was more similar to ST6.

The only thing really wrong with the film is the lackluster effects. They had to go with a lesser company because ILM was busy. The story is fun. The acting - especially the interplay between the main cast is some of the best in Trek. The film is still better than ALL of the JJ Abrams era films and Generations and Nemesis to boot.

I would also rank it above the reboot movies, and above ST4, hard to say about Generations or Nemesis, its been a long time since I saw them. I also appreciate some of the acting and dialog, the main issue for the me is the lack of realism and seriousness.

Above Star Trek 4??? The one with the whales is one of the best! So much fun. In order:
ST2
ST6
First Contact
ST4
ST3
ST the Motion Picture
ST5
Insurrection
Generations
Beyond
2009
Nemesis
Into Darkness

My taste is somewhat unusual in these things, I am mainly interested in how the movies fit into the overall continuity of the shows and setting, rather than as individual movies or a series of movies. Additionally I am far more interested in the sci-fi and political elements than the character drama and comedy.

My ranking for TOS is:
The best episodes>>ST6 and ST1 and average episodes>TAS>ST2>worst episodes>>>ST5 and ST3>ST4

For 90s-00s trek:
The best of DS9>best of TNG>best of ENT>average of DS9>best of VOY>average of TNG and ENT>ST7, ST8, ST9, Average VOY>ST10>worst of TNG and ENT>worst of VOY>>worst of DS9

Its too difficult to compare those two eras so I won't attempt it besides that the best of TOS is my favorite overall and its worst is better than the worst of the later era.

2009 Movie and everything following is cultural vandalism.

NTA but for me it's:
IV: The Voyage Home
II: The Wrath of Khan
First Contact
The Motion Picture
III: The Search for Spock
Generations
V: Final Frontier
VI: The Undiscovered Country
Insurrection
Nemesis

Haven't watched the Kelvin films in years so can't properly rate other than I remember despising Into Darkness.
I just started watching the series/movies all the way through for the first time about two years ago, starting with TOS. Currently wrapping up Picard's final season. I've only seen all those movies once so my ratings may change on rewatches.
