how your life been meanwhile?
I've begun interning at a small indian studio
Im doing animatics of a series they did last year as training
they have the scripts still in archive
so i get to redo the animatic the senior artists have already done
then we compare our works after

I've achieved the rough desired quality for the average low-end puppet rig slop animatics
just need to achieve desired output which i've been assured comes with experience
either way there's solid progress : DDDD

u learn a lot doing thumbnail and then applying it into a clean animatics
only qualm i've got is just how badly the animatics get butchered in production
most indian cartoons do the streamlined flash rig pipeline rather than outsourcing abroad for trad anim
so despite the effort we put in the animatics
they always maim and dumb down the fun bit for easier mass produced animation slop
i've seen both finished episodes and animatics side_by_side and its a crushing experience
honestly the average kid would prolly prefer the rough animatic over the slop product but thats prolly not gonna convince the boomer producers/execs who want a quick cash in

My personal goal is to work for Vaibhav studios if i ever make it as an indian animator
they're perhaps the only indian animation studio that faithfully does 2d animation without cutting corners on quality

I've had so many things i wanted post about if it weren't the damned rain
had to move workplace in the fucking rain and now the pc hauling is a more inconvenient trip

then there was the ring my dad gifted me according to family tradition on my first proper day of internship
which i then accidentally snapped cuz it was an old golden coil ring that my grandpa originally owned
so we gave that for repair and i was given another sturdier silver ring which i now wear
its like a neat holder i use to keep my animator glove fastened to my wrist while on duty

then there were the movies i watched in theatre like the deadpool and wolverine and the desicable me one
despicable me and hotel transylvania have been some of the best toony fun i've had along with the garfield flick

the daily work time with zero internet access was such a whiplash for my workflow it was unreal
aside from my YT playlist i'd downloaded beforehand i had zero secondary media to consume
I've been so heavily rewired and reconditioned that i cant work and watch stuff at the same time

another thing i learned is just how much brain work it takes to convert a script into a functional animatic play-by-play
the average script writer for indian animation shows doen't plan the shots/camera angles, just a rough description of the plot and props for the plot
aside from character sheets and an isometric of the location everything else is left in my hands
its almost like playing director over the loose script and making a smoothly paced animatic out of it
the first week was just learning to nonchalantly say "fuck the script" and taking liberties to make the plot work

As for me I've been interning at a small studio here in India
They mostly do story-boards for indian cartoons and ads with a spot of character design and layout every once in a while
The indian animation industry's been in a bit of a decline for the last year
Since a whole buncha shows/cartoons all dropped dead rightfully too imo their quality was bad
twas painfull to see a finely crafted storyboard be mangled and abused by the shitty production houses into a subpar episode
The studio saw a decline in incoming work for the past month or so

Luckily we recently got contacted by an indie team who're developing a really cool IP
They intend to contract our studio to produce Animatics for their episodes
They're a gauranteed ticket to steady work for atleast a year, more if they pull it off well
ofc its still in a trial stage they wanna get 2 episodes done by us and see if we can match their production schedule with our small team
Even better since i'm mostly through my training assignments so i'll be a part of the team when it gets started

what kind of part in animation do you work on? just do the rough sketch for how the animation would look like or something else?

its a small scale studio
we have 2 senior Animators who are the owners of the company and supervise the work
under them we have a handful of junior artists who work under supervision
there's also a few freelancers that we have experience working with who we call in if we're swamped with a heavy workload
and then theres me the only intern and youngest member
I'm still being trained in the basics mostly general figure drawing and camera language
Its less direcct animation and more of camera-director work
we do mostly animatics like this https://youtu.be/JYWIIE6p4yY (this is just fan-made work but a good example of what animatics are)
all greyscale with only keyframes drawn in and slight tweening
to give a rough feel for how the animation should look like

we get a script and briefing from the show director
then the seniors get to work drawing up a rough panel-by-panel story board thumbnails w/ framing in mind
then the junior artist use those thumbnails as a guide to create slightly more polished animatics with the provided dialogue sound files into a cohesive product
these go through a round of internal correction from the seniors then get sent for a round of corrections from the client side (thes corrections
after all that we arrive at a final clean animatic which is then sent to the production houses who then use it to assemble a finished product (drawing up back ground for unique shots/animating the character rigs/adding sfx and complete sound design)
Its a long production line and we sit at the very begining making the backbone of the product

best part about being a story-board/animatic artist is you always are in demand in the industry
be it adverts or short episodes, be it in 2-d, 3-d, or mixed media
every form of animated production requires an animatic to be made first and fore-most

i unzipped a few file i got from the animation thread and almost bricked my hard drive
turns out i managed to fill the whole 800 gb drive with clutter

I had a galaxy-brain realization meanwhile
I felt like i was taking crazy pills when i kept getting color pallete correction for an illustration job
took my senior a day to realize i was using the exact colors from the color sample
just that my huion display was shifting the hue by a few degrees

I spent 2 years thinking i had color dyslexia or something
It was just the color display hue-shifteing between the two screens
I cant for the life of me caliberate it to match my second monitor
settled for moving the photoshop window to the second display just for review

my neck and lower back have begun spasming in my sleep,
one of my damned wisdom teeth has decide to emerge at this time,
coupled with low sleep for the past week i've been one-shot by a viral fever
i'm having fever nightmares and trouble eating food due to the swollen molar gum
truly a great start for the year
god decided to front load my annual suffering in the first month

Damn, the coincidence is that I have a similar problem and I'm currently waiting for the surgery appointment. But its good that the rest got better.

i had mine done today
at first i thought the dentist just wanted my blood test results/ cbct scan
but he went through the report and gave to all-claer so i got my surgery done today itself
it wasnt a scary process at all
first they injected the anasthesia
then made an incision in my gums (more like ripped a hole)
then used a drill to break apart the wisdom tooth into chunks for him to pull out with the forcep
all while the nurse sprayed saline solution + used the saliva suction pipe thing
to keep my mouth dry and free of blood
then they stitched me up to stop the bleeding and voila it was complete

even got to keep the broken remains of my wisdom teeth
i'll reassemble the teeth chunks later
i've been advised to avoid speaking and not strain my mouth till the gums fully heal
till then its liquid food and ice cream for me

Dentist pulled my wisdom tooth with some sort of screw driver and poked a hole in my mouth roof.

Ill type the design rules out real quick, but i might make a image demostration that explains it better.


1. Eyes are always meant to be empty and not filled in, with small eye bags that connect to the "eye"(oval)
2. Eyes are to be drawn as ovals.
3. Males have cube hands, females sphere hands.
4. The head should be drawn blobish, not perfectly sphereical, add some squash or stretch to it.
5. Hair is black unless painted, it must always contour with the head
6. Eyes will contour in perspective with the head.
7. Lineart is to be used as to show the width of arms of legs.
8. No mouths
9. The body is meant to be cylinderical, and usually smaller than the head(or less width than it.
10. Eye brows are to be connected to the eyes.
11, remember that hair is always to appear in perspective.
12. Feet are to be spherical, and never are always to appear stabled onto the legs rather rhan coming from the legs
13: the arms are to be curved when posed, same with the legs, no sharp turns.
And finally: shading should be painted, not cel shaded or airbrushed.

Those are the basic rules.
