Forget about perspective, how do you paint interiors?
I'm working on this VN project and I just realized I've been more focused on characters than on backgrounds. I need a day/night variation for some rooms.
Here's my attempt so far, something is throwing me off and I'm not sure what.
I'm going for the anime/ summertime saga look, so no lines.
Help

> something is throwing me off and I'm not sure what.

uncanny type fakeness, no real shadows, theres a bizarre light coming onto the fur rug but the near window is covered and the far window is out of frame, the edges are unusually soft but also jarring against their environment (meaning you painted every object separately on a different layer and didnt do any adjustments on top), it's obviously traced on top of an image but without actually accounting for how you'd paint a room etc

its bits that throw it off and make it look middlingly amateurish. if you're going to go without lines, then learn edge control and do it well, and try painting everything on the same layer.

its like characters. there's a million ways to do it. the more you focus on it the better you get, and develop your own style.
a lot of what does it for me is the lighting and color of the lighting.

work on ur lighting game
interiors are defined by lighting and contrast because of flat surfaces and limited light source.

If you're not doing lineart, stop acting like you are.

Stop separating things into discrete objects.

Merge your layers.

Yes the lighting is coming from the window on the right, just out of frame. Not sure if the best lighting setup though its accurate as it comes from the 3d model.
Its not traced, I used a basic sketch up model and drew in the details.
>>7552634
As I understand it, its indirect lighting coming from the window.
>>7552639
Hopefully as I paint more stuff on top it will look less like the model

Since always. At least the way you're using them. You're painting, not using your Lisa Frank sticker collection. If you want to do realistic shading, you don't do half measures, that's why it looks uncanny. Your lighting isn't unified between objects, so they all stick out like they're superimposed onto the page.

Also, if you want to change the lighting, use a paintover and gradient map. I don't know how layering everything is supposed to be making things easier.

The beam of light from offscreen to the right is very confusing, you can do without it, because the central windows looks like a primary light source, you should bring the other windows into the frame to make it clear that light is coming from that or just remove it.

You went off the /beg/ rails right into the canyon, drawing tons of clutter before you solved your big values. Not only that, but you took a hard undertaking of doing not one, but two intense sources of light! You need to step back and sort the values first. The windows are lightsources, they're the brightest, then the highlights and reflections and after that objects by value. Right now your door, baseboard, headphones and whatever else is as bright as the fucking SUN, then you have to think about the wall values, ambient occlusion, reflected light. Your main source of light is both out of frame and lighting the scene at a random ass angle. With a sliver of light that thin you really think it's that bright in the room?

It's honestly easier to rebuild this shit than try to salvage it, just make a room in Blender and render it with a raytracer, then paint over it, you surely won't be able to fix it in a day or two.

I did a rough paint over. I agree with the other anons. The main things you should focus on are: limiting your light sources and adding more cast shadows. It looks flat because every thing is equally lit and none of the objects are casting shadows.

I dont get the Lisa reference but thanks, helpful paintover.
And the idea was to have flats> the ambient light in one layer > the "day" light in another layer > the night layer, with the lamp/led lights turned on; both curtains closed, on another layer.
>>7554563
Is it more confusing than dappled lighting where u dont see the tree? I dimmed the window on the center though.
>>7554627
And from the canyon I shall raise.
Theres only one light source, the window on the right though.
Definitely interiors are harder than exteriors and even more so than characters. I swear I'm no beg guys.
Regardless I got a house full of rooms I want to do for this project so I'll improve by the end(maybe).
>>7554789
I did add shadows but perhaps too softly. Since there's no object directly om the light's direction. The shadows are just from indirect lighting

The perspective IS fucked. The way you have it set up, the horizon line is just smack dab in the middle and so the viewer is either sitting down or a midget. Also the door is fucking massive compared to everything else and is fluch with the ceiling, with the handle way too high up. Should not be in line with the switch. Doorknobs are much lower, only 36" from the ground at standard.

You should honestly just start this one over rather than trying to "save" it, use this one as a basic draft and paint from 0 all on one layer.

You need to actually look around your own room and home and see how light and shadow REALLY work because you are working off of assumptions right now and it's hampering you. Like you just made the light coming in the window work as a spotlight when they don't do that. The light coming in the out-of-frame window may be poor execution, or it may not be a poor choice that should be changed in either angle of the painting or design of the room.

Not him, but 3D doesn't mean good perspective just like a photo doesn't mean good perspective, and it certainly doesn't mean the models and proportions are good. The door is absolutely fucking retarded and makes everything else look like a miniature. A door is 2m tall, the room is a shoebox.

Someone on twitter recommended checking out

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1138640/Hometopia/

It's apparently like the Sims, but with all the sim stuff cut out, just focusing on interior design. Idk how in depth you can get with scene lighting, but using it for base lighting then throwing gradient maps and adding/erasing some overlays will do you well enough. I haven't used it yet, but am planning to once I start doing more interior home/apartment shots

The thing I'm learning with VN background art is that people won't be looking at it for very long, or won't be looking at it too in depth unless you have a hidden object element.

Lighting doesn't need to be perfect OP, it just needs to set the scene. Throw some simple overlays for time of day and your players will get the gist. This is a couple I did recently. Top 2 are my first attempts at anything interior, then I just sorta learned as I went.

Because the time for when you solve all the brightness / values and colors are when you are in drafting or blocking in shapes phase. You draw the details after you've solved all the big picture stuff

I am also interested in learning how to paint room backgrounds. There is a big lack of tutorials on the internet that don't have the result looking like crap.
This was the only one I could find that wasn't trash, and even it isn't the best.
All these art shadow lessons use things like spheres which doesn't apply very well to walls of a room.

Rooms are tricky because of how massively different the values between outside and inside are. This can include any sun spot that leaks into the room. It's going to be 100x to 1000x brighter than the ambient light in a room (which translates to something like a 3x-5x increase in perceptual brightness), and the spot itself contributes quite a lot to the ambient lighting of the room.

I'm familiar with this software, it leaves a lot of room to fuck up the scale of the objects. OP probably made the room with some primitives and then got the furniture and architecture from the free model shop. OP then had to scale everything to fit the room, not realizing just how big door is. Maybe he figured it was a little girl's bed, and tried to get the door to match that size, not thinking that a little kid isn't gonna have a shrunken room.

Contact shadows son: those would be the tiny, usually sharp shadows that form in crevices between objects, for example on those shelves the part where the wood meets the wall those would be a good place to put them.
