If using a reference makes you feel good, with a enjoying process and result, it's fine.
If drawing from imagination is enjoyable, it's fine as well.
But it's best to do both, I think.
Kim Jung Gi drew mostly from imagination, but that's after he did many studies from reference.
Even then, he did a lot of life drawings as well, and he recommended seeing docummentaries to collect reference (in your mind).
Frazetta told that he not used any reference, but that was a lie.
However, he did a lot of drawings from imagination as well, such as when he was doing thumbnails before doing the painting commisions and such.
James Gurney 90% use references, though he also construct some of those same references (such as the ones from Dinotopia).
