I started painting about 7 months ago, but I haven't drawn or painted any other animal. I just love birds which are also very easy to draw. You can sketch a bird in very few lines.

Is there any benefit to freehanding perspective drawings like this as opposed to using a ruler?

it's supposed to be marksmanship but if you're not good at marksmanship you'll just end up spasming out, use a ruler honestly

if you can draw a straight line with your arm, it's good enough. you can break out the rulers when you need a more accurate perspective, which character-based illustration generally doesn't so not a lot of (visible/famous) artists get really into it

which really just boils down to "practice your straight lines"
