What exactly makes something look too overdesigned to the point it looks ridiculous and how do you avoid this effect when you're drawing armors and costumes for a fictional setting?

Unless you're an engineer or tailor, you'll fall into this trap. You have to know how to make stuff to design decent stuff.

Learn to animate. You will naturally gravitate to simpler design.

Looks like it's another shit anime that inexplicably popular in the US. Like Alita or Cowboy Bebop.

MD Geist falls right under the definition of cult classic since critics always hated it. It's in the same lane as Angel Cop

Armor and clothing are comfortable, weapons and tools are intuitive.

Everything has a purpose. Sometimes that purpose is to be aesthetic, but aesthetics are always secondary to function.

Also this. You don't have to be an engineer, but know what you're designing. Knowing how to draw alone is not enough to make compelling designs.

Someone in a thread I read earlier used the term "pseudodetail", and I think that describes the problem pretty well, even though the the meaning of the word could be up to interpretation. Pointless and unattractive details are often either the result of the artist being too lazy to think things through, but still wanting the artwork do give off the impression of complexity, or the artist simply lacking the knowledge, taste, or sensibilities to design something that looks good and makes sense. Many artists make bad designs simply because they don't know much else, so don't be one of those people.

MD Geist and Cybernetics Guardian got Koichi Ohata tons of work because as lousy as they are they showcase very well thought out and also cool mecha designs.

/ic/ has a lot of reddit poison in the sense that they don't understand or appreciate the schlock method for breaking into an industry. It's a dumb western thing in the same way people get mad that the Nagatoro artist got his job from drawing porn.

It's the exact same problem with whining about overdesign in mecha. You're too basedpilled and irony poisoned by your dogshit, lame friends to appreciate an over-the-top piece of art for what it is.

I don't even think MD Geist is good but you have to be retarded to think it's fucking art direction is the problem.

Hang yourself, eternal bore.
