How the hell do you get this good at inking, /ic/? Any good tips or resources out there on how to practice trad inking?

I like Edwin Austin Abbey and Franklin Booth as well, but Coll's work just has this energy to it.

You have to get very good at expressing tonal values through the shape and spacing of your lines.
One exercise you can do is find a ten-step scale of monochrome values, from black to white, and then try to match those values with hatching alone. I mean single-hatches, not crosshatching. Squinting or looking at it from a distance will narrow the tonal range of your vision and make it easier to see how closely you're matching it.
And then just keep doing it until you can reliably duplicate the values. You will probably have much greater control at that point which you can then use in drawing.

I should mention that once you're confident in expressing the whole value range with line alone, studying illustrators from the early 1900s will show you how to put it into practice. J. M. Flagg was a real master of hatching, not least of all because his lines are so free. Charles Dana Gibson is good too.

I appreciate this advice and will practice it, though I'm not actually that much a fan of ink drawings. I use ink mostly because it exposes your errors, so you can learn faster.

This is still probably the go-to resource if you're looking to emulate classic trad pen and ink artists. But the like it or not the best advice is to

1) Get basic drawing skills
2) Get comfortable with the tools you'll be using whether that's digital or physical
3) Study the artists you admire. See how the use lines to render form and texture and practice replicating them

If you're lucky you can find video of a good pen and ink artist working and you can see the tools they use and see how they do it in real time.
