How do you even begin to sketch something like this? I mean holy shit, I can't believe I genuinely thought I was somewhat competent at drawing, because I get absolutely stumped with more complex shit like this.

It's really just a bunch of boxes with some layers of complex mechanical details on top of it. Figure drawing is far more difficult because there's no room for error and you can immediately tell when something is off. This mech drawing is 90% nonsensical noise.

There are a few how to draw giant robots/mecha from Japan. But they just give general tips, and to actually draw their examples, you probably need to be pretty good with perspective already.
Grinding Scott Robertson is probably not a meme for this particular case.

You first need to understand the general idea behind machinery and mech style designs. Then you can understand the parts and styles that are common, and then you can start to be creative.

When you look at this and think "how the fuck can I draw this" you're not being creative. You're in the /beg/ phase for mechs, you need to learn how to just construct them at all. Just like with humans.

You have to steep yourself in mech design and architecture and learn about it in order to draw a tip tier creative design like this, you can't just do it immediately the first time. Drawing vehicles will take you far because each limb can be seen as its own vehicle that would be its own drawing.

Because almost every mecha franchise uses different tech assumptions and design solutions for the mechs. Because actual mechs barely exist and certainly not as real combat machines. Thus there is no consesus how they should look or work. Some of them even break their own supposed tech solutions - Bt for example that supposedly uses artificial muscles but all mechs looks like they work off hydraulics and servomotors.

Different sized mechs, with different motive systems and power sources would look widely differently. And then you go into stylistic choices and things get even more personal. Compare something like Votoms to Five Star Stories.

Play video games with crafting and metal objects, and adult lego stuff like 3-d printing and cooking, fidget with metal objects, throw rocks/balls and catch them and engineer/craft random stuff irl and then you can begin visualize draw stuff like this automatically if ur brain is spatial intelligent capable of it.

Understanding 3d form to the point you can bring them to paper is another.

what helped me was building gundam model kits, slowly and in a way that allows me to closely looking at the shapes of each parts and how they fit together, particularly the joints, and understand what each component is meant to do. Spent time looking at real machines or vehicles and try to find out what each parts do and how it moves. You just need to accumulate an internal library of individual components because they fit together like vocabularies in a paragraph.

Sometimes I forget that I've been staring at crazy mechanical shit since I was watching power rangers in preschool and fascinated by the megazord sequences.

Posts like this make me realize I'd have no idea were to even begin. Maybe watch a compilation of sentai mecha sequences? The ones before the 2000s or so used practical effects so there's more "mechanicalness" to them.

Step 1: draw a humanoid silhouette, this will be the base of your mecha.
Step 2: look at references of cars, tanks, planes, construction vehicles, industrial machinery etc.; sprinkle into it things that you wouldn't normally associate with mechs too to give your design an extra oonph, for example look at certain animals like crabs, or slugs, or look at the design of a 2000s radio, or a hair dryer, a bathroom radiator, anything.
Step 3: draw the mecha while looking at the refs you gathered for that particular mecha design

Do the opposite of what AI would do, and just start think about how mechanical robot like that would work in the first place. How would each part work, what would be the purpose of each part, what does it lack. Look at what normal tank needs and just think about what robot would need and how each part would need to be to function.
