"Color" blending mode

They're painting the greys while keeping the inherent value of the intended colors in mind. Takes a lot of practice to get used to it, but it's much easier to get a filmic look with this process than doing it with multiply.

no, it's multiply like the other anon said, you don't cool the darks if you're putting a color layer on top

I was looking at the hair when I typed this, skin is cooled in the lights, but the point stands

You sure about that?

Pretty sure he's just using the color shift as an underpainting to harmonize the colors and fill in gaps. You wouldn't paint the skin lighter than the jacket like that if you were doing multiply, it would all be the same base grey.

Actually scratch the underpainting part. He actually just has the color curves on an adjustment layer, and puts the color layer between the curves and the greys.

6.
<Curves>
<Grey>

7.
<Curves>
<Color>
<Grey>

I think you're confusing multiply over base color with a value map

I think you're confusing multiply over base color with a gradient map

Why do people use greyscale in digital painting?

Your colors are way too desaturated. You really just can't get that color red from multiplying on that blue. The values on 5/6 and 7 are identical, only the color changes.

Anyway. When you use the multiply process, all your base values should be the same, otherwise your color picks are just arbitrary. If all your greys are the same, your colors on the multiply layer all perfectly correspond to the correct color in neutral white light. That's why you color with multiply in the first place.

it's really good for getting texture and values right
and you don't have to worry about color theory as much

You put the colors down, how do you attempt digital painting and don't know what blending modes are?

I did this with just a color layer on csp. It feels pretty much 1:1 to me except a couple value changes which I imagine they did manually so I'm confused what is step 6 for and what do they mean with color curves, as in what tool?

Does anyone have a good guide how to go from greyscale to colour? My results always looks artificial and bad.

gradient maps help out a ton, but you also have to finetune the results, paint over the resulting colors. you can't really get to the finish line by just slapping a color layer on "overlay" on top of your values.

idk this is what i managed to squeeze out by fucking around with blend modes, it's almost what you need to multiply with
