It’s really fun to make weird stuff with clay. But do I really need to take lessons or pay for lectures to get good? I just use my hands and a knife but may get better tools because it’s so fun.

No, on YT you have a lot material to learn from and just sculpt +drawing helps a lot, especialy with e.g. portraits.

You don't need more than hands and knife at the begining. Don't pay for tools, just make them or use diffrent stuff like spoon, old credit card, saw blade.
If you want spend money go for more clay (water based or plasticine) and some kinde armature for portraits. Later you can learn how to make plaster/siliocne mold and cast your clay sculptures.
