Hi guys, I'm a beginner and I'm thinking about purchasing some Proko courses, but I saw a thread here discussing them and now I'm not sure if I should. I also saw some people saying they're really tired of observational drawing. I'm kind of new here, can you guys explain? Also, I mostly want to draw stylized art and characters. is the picrel true or fake?

go draw anime girls, find where you are lacking and study that shit. it's that simple. so no, for example you won't find yourself needing shading knowledge like on the right for the cell shading on the left

Good advice, Anon, ty! But I have a quick question: I want to draw cute anime girls, not just copy them. I want to change their poses, make them blink, walk, be expressive, bring them to life. Draw from imagination, use construction, etc. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m so curious about how this process works for artists. I don't want to be just being a human photocopier like picrel meme

nta but basically you just learn a mannequin similarly to how you can now draw a box in different angles. also you'll need the poses, expressions and character details and those you can learn by doing mindful copies where you use the mannequin and pose it as what you are copying and then layer on the details. by doing this you build a visual library that you can then use to draw original stuff

eventually when your observation's good enough you can start working on drawing from imagination. you can start right away if you want, but i think getting a good grasp on observation first is better because it makes landmarks, sizes, and the angles of lines easier to recall.
there's a lot of different methods for this, most common one i've seen is copying a pose then hiding the reference and your copy to draw it from memory. if it looks wrong, notice what parts are wrong and do it from memory again with those parts in mind.
if you do this with enough different poses you'll have a strong enough concept of proportions memorized to fill in the gaps for poses you haven't drawn before, and mix and match between poses where it makes sense.
what i also like to do is take one part of a pose i've just recalled and use it in a new pose from imagination. like if an arm is positioned a certain way, i'll take that and try to use it in a new pose. i don't know if anyone else does this but it helps me make sure i'm able to recall poses long term
i'll post a pic of my process as an example later if i remember

Listen, I know for some this is an actual mental hurdle that is hard to get people to wrap their head around so I'll make a genuine post.
First off I wouldnt purchase any courses, just pirate Proko.
Second, forget Proko, just pirate Karl Gnass's course on figure drawing, the basics of the human figure are laid bare and he explains it in plain English the most out of the other teachers(even Villppu even though hes better technically).
Third, as for your picture, the way Ive come to see it is that both left and right are the same(except for the needless rendering on the right you dont need to bother with that). Both have a basic skeleton underneath, both follow a certain set of proportions, both require understanding of gesture/action, etc etc. The only difference between one and the other is that left is an artistic interpretation(which can vary jumping from one artist to the next), and on the right is depicting what a human actually looks like(drawing wasnt always just about muh art, it did serve a practical purpose). You can jump into anime cause you honestly are gonna be dealing with the exact same problems as drawing something like the right image, the only difference is that learning right is easier cause you have dozens of books and images and knowledge to pull from so its easier to gauge progress, while on the left its harder cause that image isnt all what anime is(plus anatomically I dont think Yui's right leg would be that fucking far spread out,it should be concealed by the loli's thighs). Its easier to deviate from real life then it is just studying one flavor of anime.
That shouldnt discourage you from learning anime, cartooning a a whole is very worthwhile to learn, and most recent teachers of "the anime style" are better then their predecessors(especially since some come straight from the source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AZysLEUCmw )

A request I did if you wanna gauge my word for it

This image is about accurate observation. Right is a product of sight-sizing and it's a skill and you can learn it or not. People recommend bargue drawing because that's what it's for.

You can turn that into something more abstruse or extreme if you want to.

if you want something less specific "it's an observational drawing" and that is it.
