iโm down for this
>>7619417Make a torrent. I will seed it forever.
>>7619460Honestly, an animation torrent would be really nice.
We already have animation focused content in the general /ic/ torrent, but a specialised torrent is always welcomed.
>>7619443U can study form and motion concurrently! U can make animation with as little as a pad of paper and a camera. Make us a bouncing ball!

>only know frame-by-frame but yeahso many troubles and such perfect happiness in trying to sketch one sequence.
>>7619408 (OP)any tips on making character's movements look more natural
>>7620172i'll need to see your character anim to diagnose you but some common tips i've found helpful are :
ground/anchor them to their pivot (the feet or arms if they're leaning on a table/wall) floaty movement always looks off
utilize the eye blink more often new animators forget to close the eyes every once in a while it also helps add arch to an otherwise plain head turn (instead of plainly tracking from left to right add a blink between so the head leans in a bit before settling in the new direction)
don't shy away from anticipation and overshoot frames humans being soft flesh muscle bags means even the slightest shift in weight warrants overshoot frames even if its super subtle the subconscious picks up on it
avoid twinning/mirroring arm gestures (at least offset one hand's movement by ~4 frames to make it feel more organic) unlike anims human muscles don't sync up 1:1 and that added variance bring more life to the motion
Any recommendations for storyboarding courses/books/videos?
in krita. is there a way to have changes done to duplicate frames show up on the other like in csp
>>7620181thanks for the tips bro
>>7620194well obv, but the thing is sometimes there is techniques people can use to imitate life more realistically
for example smear frames for faster actions taken by characters
>>7620461>>7620181>avoid twinning/mirroring arm gestures (at least offset one hand's movement by ~4 frames to make it feel more organic) unlike anims human muscles don't sync up 1:1 and that added variance bring more life to the motionAmen to this, especially when it comes to tweening. I feel like a lot of people get a bit turned off by some of the precision/high framerate of it, so things like this are seriously very important. It keeps your movement from looking like a cheap cardboard cutout just moving versus a varied character with weight.
Not to say that it's easier if you do frame by frame, but I find (having done so myself as well), you can trick the brain a bit more and give it some leeway when you're redrawing frames. My theory is that there's some visual interest in seeing the animation move, but with tweening, since it's all puppeted, you have to make the motions even more engaging to sell it. Hell, even line boil adds a lot to stationary limbs to give an impression of breathing, that "this is a living person," so to speak.
GUYYYyYYS come on why is nobody posting their animations :c
regardless, here is a quick blink animation i made
>>7620494Animation takes time anon!!! You should know that...unless you're kottoanon who is a madlad with pumping them out quickly.
I do like how your blink animation is varied in timing, not just a repeated loop of the same rhythm of blinks (if that makes sense). Have you played around with different timings of your keyframes to achieve different kinds of blinks? I found my favorite blink style tends to have overshoot in it.
>>7619460i'll look into it fren

i'm trying for atleast one animated loop daily for a year
i'll start posting that built up back log on instagram or something
>>7620526>nah yours is more eye-catching>its easier to spot in the catalogThanks man. I still get surprised whenever I see my work up there, especially knowing how some anons here feel about motion tweening. I know I shouldn't really care, but I won't lie at times that the sentiment makes me feel like a lesser animator here at times.
Either way I don't think I expressed my thanks towards you as well, for doing a great job keeping these threads alive (especially considering I'm definitely a newcomer compared to the entire thread's history).
>>7620552>feel like a lesser animator here at timesdon't think that fren
tweening is very easy to screw up
hence why animators like you are all the more special
you're very good at what you do stand proud

U probs don't remember me... I used to hang out here a bunch... I think it might be years that I've been gone. U were great back then, but you've improved so much! Ur def gonna be a legend some day. (Maybe u already are <3)
Maybe I'll start lurking here again. That would be fun. My life might be entering a bit of a chill spot... but we'll see.
>>7620494I'm working on them. But at the same time, I realize how pointless it is to share un finished stuff.
Why do we share unfinished work? What are you looking for from others? Why do you need a pat on the ego?
Imagine, completely finishing a project with out any direction from anyone else.
What then? Id rather be helping someone finish their dream project
I I could encourage others I would, but for what reason.
Why was I encouraged to animate, when all it seems to do is dig at my soul.
>>7620768Why do u think it's pointless to share unfinished work? You can riff off people to help stay motivated and also other people might notice and help correct issues in your process.
I think more ppl should be posting unfinished work. Plus it's super satisfying seeing the progress get made. It's better than just seeing a finished animation posted here.

I'm going through the animator's survival kit and doing the walk cycle with the bean body. How am I supposed to keep shapes and sizes consistent? I can visually see when I make the legs too long or body too thick, but it's hard to fix. Is it just a matter of mileage?
>>7624625>Is it just a matter of mileage?pretty much. luckily you live in the age of computers so if youre working digitally you could always make a template of the body on a seperate layer and use that as a reference, even move it around relative to the frame so your sizes are guaranteed to stay consistent
>>7624625it'll come with time fren
keep onion-skin on and get used to using the select n transform tools to crudely morph the original drawing to get the rough proportions right
then just draw over that
but its definitely a matter of mileage it'll fix itself in due time
draw! draw! draw!
>>7624625>>7624649I'll offer an alternative view as well: for consistency's sake, onion skin is an insanely good thing for keeping things consistent, and using transform tools to translate spots you don't need to redraw will save you time and sanity.
However, I will at least recommend you don't fall into the trap of relying on onion skin too much: what you gain in consistency can end up limiting you with trying to stick too close to those previous frame lines, and your motions will suffer. I know you mentioned mostly about keeping sizes consistent, but if you encounter issues regarding your motions, try turning off onion skin and flip through your frames to ensure the motion is good.

The back leg extending out looks weird to me, but I don't know how to fix it.
>>7625296I think normally for a walk like this the force propelling u off of one foot and onto the other is from your calf extending your toe... so once the toe "kicks" the foot should leave the ground... kinda like u are jumping with that foot (even tho ur other foot is already on the ground). In ur walk the heel is fully off the ground as soon as it comes past center and then glides on the ground for a while giving a moon walk appearance.

You could try tweening a gradient of the two colors and sliding it over, using a clipping mask to stay within the circle, but honestly it seems like there's no direct method to achieve what you want.

how realistic is it to create a 6 minute animation in 9 months?
I want to make a film for a festival in April and I'm starting as early as I can and I figured 6 minutes is a good maximum since I only have myself to work on it
>>7636772many factors at play there
how much experience do you have?
how detailed are the visuals?
what framerate are you working with?
is it frame by frame? tweened?
judging by the vagueness of your question and the fact that youre even asking it im gonna wager a guess and say its unlikely unless youre taking massive visual shortcuts
>>7636815i've been animating since 2023, I've made something 1 minute in length before and I've made longer storyboards, I wanna do traditional animation that I'll composite later and I'll probably do it in 24 fps, I haven't really decided on visuals fully yet but I put pic related together earlier for how I might want it to look
>>7636872by traditional I mean frame by frame but I might take shortcuts like reusing stuff sometimes
>>7636872doesnt sound realistic to me, also forgot to ask whether you have a full time job or if you can dedicate all your time to animation but either way i dont think its feasable
a 6 minute animation on 1s sounds like a monstrous pain in the ass, unless youve completed other projects of a similar length i foresee you getting massively burned out relatively quickly
>>7636882I've always animated on 2s, and I don't have a job, I only go to college some days of the week. Basically, I have a lot of free time to work on this as long as the assignments don't get in the way
>>7636888best advice i can give is to maybe put a solid month in of hardcore work into it, see how much progress you make in that time frame and ask yourself whether you can get it done at the pace youre going in the remaining 8 months. best of luck to you whatever you decide to do
why is all animation software so fucking infuriating to work with
everytime I want to try animation I end up fiddling around with the fucking software for two hours trying to fix some incomprehensible, un-googleable problem and then I quit for six months
>>7636925Sometimes it takes the right software. But then again, if you're really wanting to animate, you can't just wait for the "right one" to pop up.
I've said it before but I'll say it again: I was a really bad on/off animator before Procreate Dreams came out. It definitely is a scuffed program, but I will at least give it credit for getting me to actually *animate* since I wasn't worrying about my brushes, since I could just carry them over. It was a really good program in the sense of getting me to actually animate.
Once the cracks started to show and a lot of the tedious parts of the program were apparent, moving over to ToonSquid felt better, as I had the drive to want to animate even if I couldn't recreate my brushes as well in there. I feel if I jumped in with TS first I may have just started stressing again about the brush engine not being as robust, and maybe I would have fallen into the on/off rabbit hole again.
>>7636307well fuck you too retard
you made the same front leg jitter moron
how much exactly is someone supposed to bend the leading leg's thigh on the "Down" frame?
does it look jittery cuz it's a static cycle instead of moving forwards?
it looks to me like her knee join't are snapping and dislocating in ever squash frame
like even picrel for the survival kit pdf depicts the squash frame leading knee bent much further than the contact pose
i'm not the only one who see that right?
is this one of those things that only bother you if you are looking for it specifically?
or is it cuz these keys are for tooney characters and don't apply to a realistic human figure?
>>7636891do a 1 week trial of storyboarding, animating and coloring/compositing a 10 sec sequence (preferably middle to high complexity)
see how long it takes to get it done
then use that as a measuring stick for how realistic your schedule is
simple as
in my experience (if working on it full time 8 hours a day) it takes about a month to do 1 minutes worth of key frames
and about 3 weeks to get in-betweens done right over those key frames assuming your ladders are on point from the get go
and ofc 1 week to color it all via bucket tool assuming its a flat color/you've drawn the shadow outlines
this is a for a rather simplified character design with static pre-drawn bgs
>>7636925go back to plebbit you crybaby faggot

>>7636307here's the revision you slack-jawed faggot no thank to your snide quips btw
turns out the up and down frames only feel right on toons
more realistic figures are better off with "contact" being the lowest and "pass" being the tallest pose

IRL of course we have sound that tells us of the impact of the brick, and even if there is a better way to show the impact of the brick (such as it breaking into pieces), animation is all about visual storytelling. It's honestly awesome what we can do with so little and how these little adjustments can make a huge difference in making the viewer feel/connect with what is happening on screen.

>>7625466Not necessarily true. There are a lot of subtleties to how you walk based on how your posture is. If your body is mostly in line vertically, you'd push more with your calf yeah. But if you lean forward, your body naturally wants to keep catching itself with your feet as not to fall, so you're mostly using your quads to lift your trailing leg forward than you are trying to propel yourself. Like, when you read thus try it. Walk totally upright and then walk hunched while looking at your phone. If you're leaning backwards (ie carrying something heavy) you'll walk even differently, but that's more obvious.

>>7646189i love you too fren : DDD
>>7646514Hi bug anon, I cant exactly download everything you posted right now, but what would you recommend as THE most essential downloads from your posts? I've got a pretty solid foundation when it comes to drawing and I just bought toonboom, so I wont need any of the beginning drawing fluff. I plan to go through the animators survival kit video course and book, but thats all Ive got planned.

these and Survival Kit will train you well
Also read the pdf before you watch the lecture video course
the pdf has all the knowledge condensed into it the video lectures are add-ons for if you have doubt *not* the primary source
read the pdf n see the corresponding example files first and then watch the lectures
If you're aiming for anime production i'd reccomend Dong Chang channel on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@DongChang
And also start dumping some skill points in compositing softwares like Opentoonz/AfterEffects/Nodes in ToonBoom
it'll pay off in the long term
>>7647545Not him but thanks Kottoanon, breaking the stuff down makes it less daunting to look through. Still, wish there were more tweening resources out there hahah, but hey, we take what we can get.
>>7642254>i love how her hair sorta explodes into a star shapeIt's funny, because it used to not do that--her design has very much changed over the years to give her a more distinguishable silhouette. Also after finally watching Panty and Stocking recently, man, it makes me want to animate more, especially because that show exemplifies everything I want to do with lewd animation: the weird, the sexy, and the absurd
I made this like a month or more ago. I was trying to figure out how to animate boobs with nothing but my pure knowledge of looking at them online

>>7647545Oh shit, thanks a lot anon. I cant wait to get started. Also I meant to say I bought toonsquid on my ipad, not Toonboom, might have to get that one later. But right now, I have no idea which software is the standard/the best or where I can get it yet. Which one do you use?
A
gave up on that arm trowing thingie because it was to boring and i was putting too much detail to the point i lost the purpose of the study, so i'm making bouncy guys now
>>7619408 (OP)>Kit *Video* courseI've been looking around. But none of the torrents are working. Pretty weird.
The one on IA, their torrent doesn't include the videos inexplicably.
>>7649185Nice. Keep ur anatomy and rendering studies separate from ur motion studies. Putting them together when only one is good will drag the other down and probs isn't an effective way to study. Ur bouncy guy looks pretty good tho, maybe try some stickman / gesture of people doing stuff with their hands. Try a punch or someone picking something up.
anyone here have video class in how to animate in tvpaint 11? in special from a good animator? per example aaron blaise has a course with tvpaint and i wouldn like to download this one or similar.
>>7649423and no its not a tutorial in how to use tvpaint 11. its mostly a video process of step by step of a animation made on tvpaint i would like to see.
Tanya Channel is really informative but its all in russian (no subtitles) so it only helps a little.

There is also Erica yt channel (the welcome to hell creator) and tamakuz also does most of her animation on tvpaint. both of these last persons have most of their process on pantreon so, if anyone has the ways to tip them (and share here maybe) it would be cool!

I created a discord server where people can post their work and ask for feed back.
this server is not here to replace/take away traffic for these threads. I just want to give detailed feed back to people askin' for it without floodin' threads.
Join if u want ofc, hopefully it doesn't get any bigger than 20 users.

>>7653425really well made
this took 2 hours but hey it's a start
drawing on ones is a lot though jeez
Ngl, starting to feel a plateau with my tweening skills...thinking maybe to revisit frame by frame again.
>>7657652Oof, ones dude? I won't flat out discourage you from it but the wobbly-ness is very apparent. Did you animate this straight ahead or pose to pose?
>>7657683Tweening is for pussies anyways. Frame by frame is where real men are forged.
>>7657696You're not going to convince me it is for pussies. It takes a lot of time and effort the more complex an action is. It definitely sucks when you can tell a person didn't take any time to really properly separate the components, then I would be inclined to agree about the "cheapness" of it.
Tweening's strength lies in the consistent way you can do loops. I have massive respect for minus8's longer form animations where there clearly is a lot of time spent in making it look not janky or making great and unjarring transitions (thinking of that sex game animation). That rope animation started lagging ToonSquid so badly because of all the nested symbols I kept cramming in there, hahah.
But ah, I'm wasting my breath. Some of you guys don't like it. That's fine. I like both. Both are good. ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ Here, take an older frame by frame animation I did as well.
>>7657683i tried the hybrid method laid out in the survival handbook. i drew the poses first and then a straight pass on the head on another layer and another for the body and legs.
And yeah i guess knowing how many drawings to use when is a skill in itself but i'll be fine mostly practicing on twos right?
>>7657734Brother you're speaking to a fellow tweener. It's pussy shit in comparison. That's why i don't fuck with frame by frame. But it's more difficult and respectable
Nearing Bump limit
Vote for the next OP thumbnail
Man what am I doing? This is some silly shit pffft.
>>7657775I would imagine twos would look better just for stability's sake. There's a reason most people don't do line boil on ones for the most part since it's so jittery (unless you do the Flash thing where you hit the smoothen button on the vector art, then it tends to be subtle enough). Ironically that's why tweening is better at higher frame rates because there won't be that wobble, and it's why I prefer adding line boil at lower framerates.
>>7658547Fair enough. I've had a fair share of people who keep ragging on me for delving into tweening. I still respectfully disagree though--there's definitely areas where doing something frame by frame would be quicker, easier, and faster, especially with really short loops. Again, just a matter of taste. I think what I'm trying to say is that if you want to achieve a similar level of quality of god-tier frame by frame quality as a tweener, then you're going to be spending a shit load of time figuring workarounds and getting down and dirty in those motion graphs.

>>7653425>https://litter.catbox.moe/np7r97tgy93hh4s4.mp4link died i missed this : (
>>7657652let me share a secret with you
the pass pose is actually the true highest pose and the contact is the true lowest frme
RIchard William's keys are for characters that are carrying significant weight
hence it feels off when applied to armless figures
>>7657683>>7657734well done anon
at this point why aren't you investing into a PC already?
i think the tablet's gonna bottleneck you from getting too crazy with tweening
>>7657775the secret with deciding the number of drawings is understanding what speed your character is moving at
slow is expensive and fast is cheap
the brain can fill in the gaps from one drastic pose to another as incredibly fast motion
but the anticipation/follow through/secondary action that eats up the frame count budget
watch FLCL if you wanna see the masters at work at a super tight frame budget it's glorious
>>7658547hey hey now you don't need to put down one thing to elevate another that's a flawed thought process
2-d animation being a feat of expertise is true statement completely independant of whether tweening is easy or not (it ain't you're not giving it enough credit)
the peak of tweening i'd put would be minus8 and i cannot for the life of me imagine anyone achieving that output and art style 2d traditional animation

i tried to do a simpler motion but it's pretty much guesswork. need to keep an eye out for video reference
spent a ton of time playing with the timing too, started with twos, then threes, but i think it looks best like this on fours? but now it needs more drawings >.>
>>7661385You can also get up and act things out you know? It feels awkward but pro animators def do it.
