How you fix it is by looking at the refs you had and trying to do what they did. No, you won't get it right on your first, second, third or 50th try. But you won't ever get it if you don't try. That is just it's part of the struggle, and it's one of the reason to likes of Miura and Inoue are so revered. They do something incredibly difficult and make it look easy.

I asked this because I'm planning to submit something to Shueisha's seinen manga award.
Participants shall choose which category they will submit their work to.
I'm stuck between

Honestly just apply directly to all those publishers and if any of the editor's bite they'll try to help you figure out what your best(/the best option for them) option is. That might be submitting your work to a competition. That might be "this is good enough to run in the magazine so we'll just pretend you submitted it to the competition, award you an honorable mention and publish it", it might be "make a lot more one-shots for competitions" AKA you're not there yet and need more practice so draw something for these competitions, and so on. No harm will come from just sending it directly in. Even no response is enough to tell you that you're not there yet. A good editor doesn't tend to make a habit of letting good opportunities pass them by.

I made the nose one especially large because there is a common misconception in manga that manga artists don't draw noses or only draw dots for noses, or merely "symbols" such as > shapes,
But this is evidently not the case when you actually look at them.

I like to make these collages because they help to reveal this kind of thing that is otherwise more subtle. It becomes clear through compilation.

If anyone has any ideas for such collages that would be good to make, please do suggest any and I may give them a go

Its true that this guy is skilled, but he's fallen into the novice trap of just doing the same things over and over and over again, with marginal increases each time. He's redone the same pages a number of times, and even reversed course into an entirely new genre, scrapping his original project he was already someone deep into (though he had also redone THOSE pages a few times as well.)

I agree with this post. Endlessly polishing or redoing a picture makes you very good at doing.... that picture. But where does it end? What happens when an anon who has done so many redos inevitably wants to revise yet again? The two biggest noob trap "experts" make is either getting stuck on the first few pages like this guy, or forgetting to remember that comics are meant to be read. I remember running into a guy who's first chapter bloated close to a hundred pages because each page was storyboarded with 2-3 panels each. Before you ask, no he never finished it. You could actually say that technically he never even started. Illustrators in particular have a habit of vastly overestimating what it takes to complete a comic, because you can't truly know until you've done it. I said before, this medium either humbles or humiliates people. I'm personally fascinated at seeing how people trip over their own feet even when they wear diamond encrusted shoes- as it turns out, the value of those shoes doesn't matter until you can walk.

this, the real test is drawing your first 3 pages I think. That's when you know if you have the motivation/diligence to get past roadblocks and draw in circles. Doing one page can be easy and fun, and you'll be amazed at what you do. Doing a cover is even more fun since its just regular drawing, but once you have to connect multiple pages together, you start to realize how much work it is. You WILL get tired and have to take a break. Then you will have to make compromises with your style when you realize what you're doing is not working.I think only a few people on earth can consistently draw hyper detailed comics and they're being PAID so its not even comparable to average joes like us.

I wanna agree with this on a general level though maybe it depends on the person since my energy is low. In my own experience it was an uphill battle and for several years all I was able to manage was about 100 or so pages during that time. It took a major perspective shift for me to really kick my ass into gear and no longer feel like every time I started I was pushing the boulder or feeling the dread and anxiety that came with just putting pen to paper. I don't know how people could do this line of work without also accepting that it has to be a lifestyle just due to the sheer amount of time and energy you need to complete anything. But I understand the basic idea, 3 pages is a great shit test of just about anything, comics included. Coming from point zero three pages can be a monumental task.

About style compromise, refusing to fuss around and let my art shape itself naturally has been one of the greatest gifts I could have ONLY gotten by drawing comics at a fast pace. If you're unhappy with how your art looks it will 100% solve it. I think the masters are a lot like professional athletes in a physical sense, we all have our natural caps on energy and focus before we need sleep. Theirs has to be incredible that they don't have to work around it as much as the rest of us peasants.

The midwits/NPC
Drawing is no sweat for them, but they're not very creative. They're NPCs. You can see them have successful careers just by their unlimited energy to draw.
The ADHD
Even drawing for an hour is a pain for them, but they're usually more creative than the NPC. They're better suited to become writers, but their writing is usually not very long, so they're not even a "writer." Most of them will burn out and end in failure.

there are too many comments to reply to but I get the general sentiment, I agree with almost everyone that its better to progress instead of endlessly refine. and I don't really believe there was any cruel or negative sentiment so I don't really get why people were being defensive on my part, I think the assumption that I have been mulling on 3 pages all this time is incorrect, in reality I have massive breaks where I focus on my other interests. making this comic isn't as important to me as it is to a lot of other people (which by the way is fantastic), so I'm happy if it never gets made, I'm happy if it takes me two years or ten, I used to draw of a job, now I can just do it for myself.

This is sort of just a tangent of the "What's more important, art or writing?"

There are a lot of really cool designed characters that are either written like shit, or just basically don't have a character. There are plenty of characters that have a pretty boring design, but are still likable and well-written, and there are plenty of characters that look cool/unique, AND are well written.

Do you lose detail when scanning in comics in black and white?

I've heard some scan their mangas in as grey scale, just to preserve the detail. I only work in black and white though

Well yeah. Just compare originals to the printed release.
The difference won't be as much when just scanning but you're translating real life (which is not monochrome) to monochrome, so you're naturally going to end up with a loss of detail.

It depends on the setting to be honest. A lot of settings have people generally in relatively (keyword RELATIVELY) grounded settings, so people are wearing what makes sense in that time period/location. Like people wearing student uniforms in a school, etc. That said, trying to make your character look interesting has never been a bad thing. It's good to have a prospective reader at least WANT to intrinsically learn more about the guy/gal from the get-go.
