I’ve seen plenty of advice here on using Twitter for promotion but what if I want to branch out to Reddit? I’m mostly throwing homework or stuff I don’t feel like finishing there. Besides cross-posting in a bunch of subreddits is there anything else I should be doing?

Reddit is kinda shit these days. It's full of normies as per usual, but places like r/commissions got flooded with /jeet/s and never really recovered from it.

Most subreddits run super strict rules about self-promotion which combined with their tastes, I just really don't care about appealing to those funko pop loving motherfuckers. Feel most everyone's in the same boat.
If I was going to promote on Reddit I'd just buy an ad, last time I checked it was super cheap, although it's super cheap anywhere that allows self-serve since the ad markets crashed like 8 times, and beats playing by their rules.

I've never seen this strategy to be that successful. Even for pretty drawings.
It's probably not the best for looking for commissions directly. But you can get some level of fame from posting comics and fan arts. Whether that's useful for you, who knows.

Didn’t consider ads but I’ll think about it! The minimum required is like $50, it won’t bankrupt me but still not an amount that I can afford to spend leisurely.

Thanks, I’ll try posting some stuff there. Looks like I’ll actually have to put some thought into catering to the respective subreddits there. Was kinda hoping I could make do with any random crap made.

Reddit is a self-contained ecosystem like 4chan. Growth on Reddit won't carry over to other sites. Redditors like to stay on Reddit and only Reddit.
Not to mention the retarded opinions, unsolicited criticism or "advice", extreme passive aggressiveness, and bad attempts at humor you'll be exposed to.
Even if you ignore the comments and only use it as your dumping ground, some power-hungry mod will likely ban you for "spam" or "self-promotion".

I had multiple posts reach 5–10k upvotes which lead to around ten new followers on my Twitter and Instagram. Don't waste your time.
I'd suggest giving Bluesky a shot if you want to branch out beyond Twitter and Instagram, but I think that site is still too niche and borderline dead already.

Bluesky is dead as fuck, I don't know anyone who's doing 1/20th as well on Bluesky as they are on Twitter or Instagram.
And their sense of humour is so shriveled and dead it makes you think you're being too harsh on Reddit.

All those subreddit rules are a knock-on effect of the fact that reddit admins want to drive and keep traffic in reddit. That's why if you want to send anyone anywhere else you have to play those convoluted games. Or just pay.
>>7622395
Followers are mostly worthless too, unless they are prospective customers. No, just having a big number of them doesn't mean anything if they are following because they want free stuff.
>>7622415
From what I've seen Bluesky is just a cattier, more unhinged version of Reddit.

The only sub that I see users get consistent traction on is r/comics, but for the most part only the most shameless "trump bad" comics that regurgitate reddit-approved opinions cut through the noise.

Reddit bad but. . .
Twitter and Bluesky GOOD.
Not like they have inhabited by the same demographic, are you guys genuinely retarded ? I'll add discord at the same level as reddit. Anywhere where the rich are, are always full of funky loving leftist idiot.

Depends on the type of work you do. The general purpose art subs aren’t really worth it, but if you do fanart for a specific niche or franchise, post it there. if you're good enough, someone will probably pm you eventually asking for comms or some retard asking for a free drawing. Thats my experience at least.

Reddit doesnt allow much growth since everything is kept inside individual communities. Once an artist has had a few drawings gain traction within a subreddit they quickly grow tired of them, so each subreddit is only really good for a couple of posts before you have to take a long break from it.

Likes and followers mean jack shit too. Someone can follow you just 'cause they liked one post and never care about your stuff again. What actually matters is having a niche, if people see you as 'the [x] artist', that sticks way more than some random numbers.

rough estimates, but it looks like bluesky has around 3.5 million daily users, where twitter has 368 million monthly users - that's a huge difference to be sure, but i wouldn't say bluesky is dead by any means, especially compared to something like cara with it's piddly piss 300k active users.

same as twitter, play the social media game. use hashtags, suck up to popular people, market yourself. frankly i dont understand how people do this without feeling disgusted by themselves, but whatever pays the bills i guess.

>>7622525
Discord servers are okay too, niche communities with their own ingroup rules for self promotion. Only problem is finding decent servers, some don’t share invites freely or put themselves on aggregator sites.

>>7622537
What’s the sweet spot for total submissions per subreddit before leaving? I normally just go for 1 post before moving on to another.

Really? I only see right wing caricatures on twitter when using it ( though I do use it sparingly). I usually get left wing moralfagging from artists I follow on my art twitter. Zach Hadel gave a great tip on using twitter almost a decade ago, switch your region to japan, you'll get a bunch of japanese artists and moon speak you can't read (You'll still see trending topics in where ever you're at though.)

I've seen low effort AI slop get more likes than actual art by artists who get 10k like on average on Twitter
Bluesky is quite dead unless you're a furry artist specifically, or say stuff like "erm, that was quite problematic" unironically
