It helps get yourself out there. But it has to be organic. I remember this one artist on twitter who used to insist on follow4follow and drew very ugly fanart where everyone had huge calarts mouths with giant teeth. Horrifying. They would push their prints and promo constantly, and only saw other artists as stepping stones. You won't be very successful like that. But you don't need popularity in social media if you are active in the industry or indie circles, mutual of mine gets work in game concept art for drawing guns and mechanical details very well
