A place for anons going through any of Andrew Loomis' books to post their work and help each other.

>What the fuck is a Loomis?
Andrew Loomis was an early 20th century American illustrator. Now he's probably best known for the Loomis Method for drawing a head in any position. In his day he published a number of art instruction books which were some of the first that were reasonably approachable for the general public. In ye olde internet days before the millions of art instruction grifters they were a readily available free resource.

>Why should I learn from some dead guy? Is he really that good?
Yes and no. the fundamentals of art are pretty much the same no matter what resource you use, but he admittedly has holes and blindspots throughout his books and he's a bit wordy compared to modern art instruction. For my part I'm just a hobbyist who likes old shit and thinks it could be fun to actually go through some of them and see if I can grow from permaBEG-let to permaBEG-man.

>Ok, so what are his books?
Fun With a Pencil - His beginner book. You vill draw 10,000 of ze funny bald men und you vill like it. Kind of a meme at this point as the book that killed a million begs. I'll be starting here, but people are free to go through whichever one they want.
Figure Drawing for All It's Worth - Self-explanatory
Drawing the Head and Hands - This and Figure Drawing are probably his two most recommended books. They're more focused than his other books and are still really good resources for their topics.
Successful Drawing - A more serious fundamentals course than FWaP, but probably not great for absolute BEGs. A lot of information about perspective.
Creative Illustration -. Covers higher level topics that focus more on developing and following through on a completed illustration

>How can I get them?
Google "<book you want> + pdf"

In the" OC redraw thread" an anon recommended Loomis to me yesterday. I downloaded the books and begun FWAP today. I'm presuming this it's a coincidence given that Loomis seems to be a staple of /ic/ but it's good timing none the less.

pic rel is my first three heads. The characters are from OC Redraw, should I be making them more ball-like? Is Katie (the Kat) best?

I've done a thorough studying of fwap and fdfaiw, I'd post some examples, but I just can't be assed.
Great books though, but I personally would say you should learn cartooning from Preston Blair rather than loomis, since Loomis' cartooning was... uh... hit or miss, at the best of times.

Drawing class tonight. Only have time for a little bit of Loomis as a warm up.

>>7627704
Blair's cartoons definitely look more appealing and the drawings are way cleaner, but I figure for a group study general Loomis' broad range of topics gives more people the opportunity to join in.

>>7627628
Try drawing through a few pages of FWaP first and then apply what you're learning to your own drawings.

I'm being a little facetious, I've only been at it for two days and am enjoying the practice. I do tend to avoid copying directly from the book as he repeatedly mentions wanting people to use his basics to build their own forms. I'm going to do the "draw Loomis" on pg24 and will post it tonight.

I'll admit I also lose some interest copying things directly, it feels mechanical. Of course I recognize the purpose of study is to strengthen "mechanical" skill for future application in creative work, it's why I'm here.

I know what you mean, it's a good attitude to be enthusiastic about making your own drawings now. I've seen people just grinding out FWaP who never have the curiosity to try their own drawings. On the other hand I do think there are some things that are harder to pick up just by reading through if you're not copying at least some of his examples.

The other thing about copying is that I begin worrying more about whether my snarling papa looks exactly like his snarling papa versus whether it successfully conveys the emotions of a snarling papa (and how!)

There are different levels of copying. It's ok to go through and do some quicker copies to help understand the underlying concepts without worrying if you're 100% accurate. An accuracy copy is a different thing in itself, and while they're important to work on at some point you don't have to do it right now with Loomis if you're not excited by it.

You miss it and Prof. Blook is going to get snarly. And how!

Even though I kind of started FWaP for the meme to have more consistency in practice rather than going with Heads and Hands or Figure Drawing, I actually really admire the structure of the book. You start out with a vaguely round shape with some quick guide lines. Then the next step is to work towards a sphere. Then you start adding cross contour guidelines for consistency. You begin to manipulate the features on the face as you rotate them around the sphere. Then you begin adding bigger shapes onto the sphere to construct different head shapes. And then you end up learning the Loomis head that you can apply to realistically proportioned heads of you want. It's actually kind of rigorous even if you're making silly little bald dudes

Just did my first blook, felt like FWaP could be a good way to start out since everything else has been intimidating to me, and made me slow-going. I was gonna do this in actual pencil but my pressure control is shit and I only have HB and 2B on hand so I used my screenless tablet instead since I can then have multiple layers. Don't have access to a scanner anyway so this is better if I want to post. I hope I can keep up and do the entire book within a reasonable amount of time.

Some of today's work. Spheres are a fun warm up. Dunno if it's ultimately useful, but you really have to think and try to feel the form to get the contours to in the right place an wrapping realistically.

Packing for vacation so just a little bit of study time today. Probably won't be able to post for a little bit. Remember everyone, all blooks are soulful.

Alright, 3 more. This was fun. Tried experimenting a bit with different shapes today. I used the circle tool for the last one, but I ended up experimenting a bit more with the hair there to compensate.

yeah, I'm using small pieces of my art paper I normally use for other mediums. I've been away for a few days but getting back to the more complicated stuff, I'll switch paper as well.

Just a single one today, going out soon and I'm anxious and stuff.
I was thinking of a character with one of those Animal Crossing-esque noses but with a round bottom last night when going to sleep. The hair and smile is from some anime girl with really pale skin who wears a long skirt, I don't know who she is though. Tried to recreate the smile, or snarl, from memory and didn't turn out so well. Also couldn't figure out how to make the nose look 3D without adding those equator lines to the actual sketch but I was kind of in a hurry.
Keep the momentum going!

They are! I ran through the "practice" blooks on pg19.

Your concern is noted. It IS fun though and I'm only using a bit of my art time to running through a practice page. I've mostly been making women out of modeling clay, so Loomis reminds me to have fun with a pencil too.

Not to spam, but I wanted to add that it's good that you don't let anxiety stand in the way of doing even a little bit. Even if you only do one, it's better than none.

Started studying and reading "Drawing the Head and Hands" after a long break from drawing. I'm learning a lot, but it does get a bit repetitive at times. It definitely drains your energy if you're not used to grinding the same topic.
