friend of mine is skeptical about doing fanart on social media like twitter, cuz he has these grand notions about his "creative philosophy" of only doing original artwork and never putting it anywhere but his own website, and im tryna tell him not to knock it till he's tried it
obviously, what he does with his art is his business, I just don't want him to kneecap himself out of what could be very fruitful artistic prospects if he gave it a fair chance.

Social media sites are already competitive as fuck for artists, so kneecapping yourself even further by posting exclusively on your own website that no one is ever going to fucking visit is just choosing to fail. Like you are actively going out of your way to fuck yourself over by doing that.

I think fanart is fine if it's coming from a place of sincerity and isn't just someone trying to cash in on fotm slop; that shit always rubs me the wrong way.

hes got a lot of good grasp on anatomy and rendering but also has this really unique, sorta surreal and grungy sort of aesthetic, its hard to describe, i could describe it as sorta in the middle between ren and stimpy, invader zim, and dr seuss, but really its best to just let it speak for itself

hes got a lot of cool original characters and just in general a really unique vibe and sense of humor to their stuff, and i think they would kill it if he led an indie animated series, but he has this strange sort of self-alienating idea of themselves as someone who doesn't need material stability or to ride any trends or algorithms for their art to succeed, like he needs to prove his artistic skill and ideas are just that good that he doesn't need no got damn algorithm
he doesn't wanna touch doing anything fandom-related out of some strange idea that it'll ruin the value of his stuff and it'll just become unremarkable and identical to everything else, which is obviously not gonna be the case with how unique his style is, but he can't see that, he thinks he'll only ever enjoy doing his personal little OC's and any success he gets from playing the game like a normal artist will be worthless even if it gives him the chance to do some dream project in the future, nahh he'd rather starve himself working on some giant master project for 20 years like richard williams


the worst part is his only plan for a career is to either get into some studio job like laika or whatever, and if that fails, he intends to just give up on art altogether and get a normie job
really he has this whole mindset of "all or nothing" auteur-brain main character syndrome that really aggravates me as someone whos kinda been there themselves and never had it pan out

they just have a bit of an ego issue and they need some gentle coaxing to dislodge their head from their ass
they did the same thing for me once, i wanna pay it forward

and like, i get it, with the personality and struggles he has and where he comes from as a person, i totally empathize with that impulse to self-alienate and tie your identity to being an eccentric outsider with mad skillz vs the world, but i feel like thats a dead end for his growth, in his career and as a person, i want him to stop being so cynical about what the "normalfag social media artist" metagame has to offer him, instead of being so picky about on what terms he succeeds creatively when he really has no idea how good it could be if he just went with the flow and took what he could get from it

I think you overinflate his talent just because you're good friends with him. I don't think it's lack of fanart holding him back. He genuinely STINKS.

Now maybe he finds fulfillment drawing for himself and hosting them on his site
Or maybe deep down he knows he stinks so he won't post on social media and humiliate himself or confirm it

But if he was actually good at art, he's correct, you don't need to play the social media game at all. Opportunities will find you.

Also come to think of it, this might be a 3D chess move for OP to get anons to shit on his friend because OP reeks of being jealous or annoyed by his friends overinflated confidence in himself. So yeah, your friend does stink and I'm too autistic to hide what I think.
