I have never seen or heard of an artist that has created anything substantial while working 40+ hours a week
And by "substantial" I mean more than just a finished drawing every 3 weeks and some boxes

Not even doing it "on the side" they flat out say they don't draw/write/make music anymore

i've heard of some indie game devs that made successful games/demo/prototypes while they were working or studying full time
it's possible, but unlikely. especially for most people here.
often they get a bit lucky after a clip from their demo goes viral or a youtuber plays their game or something.

Art is basically all I do and it's a struggle to finish shit. If I had a real job I would definitely just quit due to lack of time and more importantly mental energy

I refuse to work more than 20-25 hours a week at this point
I was working nearly 50 just to keep my shitbox studio apartment which is basically a living room with a kitchen. It was in a shitty neighborhood and was costing upwards of 1.4k
I chose to go part time and now just rent a room.
The WEF won, I own nothing.

obviously its hard to make art when you're waging all day. and then you're too tired with what little free time you have.

I think you can do it, but you have to love the process of drawing, not just care about the end result.
If you see drawing as work to create the picture you want, then it uses up energy that you don't have to spare after working all week.
If you see drawing as a hobby that you actually enjoy, then it can be what recharges your energy and be the thing you look forward to doing when you come home from work.

Yep, I feel like I've failed, even though I've been sorta forced into it. Now got some Web developer job fulltime, where I'm on minimum wage, got 32 AUD at my last resturant job and now im on 22 AUD at this new job (somehow below minimum wage), everybody is telling me how good it as and how lucky I am to have a job in my field, and compare me to all my friends who are all struggling to find proper work. Im fucking privileged to be on less than minimum wage because of the experience I'm getting.

All I wanna do is draw all day, but I guess I missed that boat, although I spend all my free time after work and over the weekends on it. familys pissed cause they thought getting me to slave away fulltime would get me out of the house and socializing, but now my life is just work (sketch during breaks), gym and draw. I might need to kill myself.

I'm just now 22, so I could be getting 740 AUD every 2 weeks from the job seeker program (Which you can stay on forever if you pretend to look for jobs), but my family wants me to keep working in IT cause its the future, as opposed to comics.

Anyway, Im gonna keep working away until I can make some money and try to go full time into comics. I fucking hate computers, spent 3 fucking years getting a retarded IT degree, only to work minimum wage, fuck this shit nigga I just wanna fucking draw and make the best comic ever

Schizo rant over

100% agree.

I thought about it, and researched it. No wonder. The "good" artists either were trust fund babies who can go full time, or threw themselves into it full time (quit work). No wonder so many artists disappear when they turn 20 - 23, that's when they graduate and all their energy is put towards food on the table.
80% of famous artists are from wealthy families.

It IS actually, literally impossible to make it unless you can become a NEET in someway (family support, fake an illness for gibs, find a patron, sugar momma, etc) because your brain has a finite amount of real estate and glucose it can use per day. Your willpower and focus is finite.

if you use 90% of your energy at work, and 10% for your hobby; you will be outclassed by the bloke putting 100% of his focus on his hobby. He will be able to figure out plot holes, develop characters, observe color and lines "better" than you because he can dedicate 100% of his brain real estate to pursuing art. The "normies" who have their attention stretched thin by work and kids cannot "make it" but they have a "balanced and normal life" so it's all about what you want.

I made a spreadsheet a while ago researching the top 50 indie games and all of them found an investor or private funding to work on it full time. nobody on the list made their games part time. Some of them are Minecraft, Stardew, Undertale, Arknights, Cookie Run, Genshin, all of them worked on their craft full time. If you are not born rich, find an investor/patron.

Barely anyone wants to work in security, especially not night shifts. My colleagues are mentally at elementary school level. They take anyone who is willing and doesn't fuck up too often.

If you're not from a wealthy family you rolled hard mode as an artist but it's not an excuse to not try

Victory also tastes sweeter if you do make it

lol. I work full time and take care of my 6 month old son. Iโ€™m at about 1 quality painting a week. About a hour a day. They donโ€™t all turn out. Much more on some weekends. Hereโ€™s this weekโ€™s.

Software job and work from home. Get that kind of job if you can.

having a job makes drawing time more precious, you would probably get more drawing done. As a neet I have a hard time drawing all day because its mentally taxing. So its a day full of nothing, then an hour or two of drawing.

A fair amount of old mill buildings (high ceilings, large windows) in the northeast US have been divided into artist studios. Some buildings have an open studios event twice a year, some once every month. I've attended quite a few, and a lot of the artists do regular full-time work, coming to studio on nights and weekends. And their studios are full of work.

They are worth a visit for the chat alone-- you can see how the non-digital artist community lives. A few are quite standoffish, but most of them are happy to discuss their work.

I attempted it.

A newspaper sized strip, heavily Photoshopped, backgrounds recycled.

I was managing a weekly update.

But my commute is no longer a half hour stroll, but a 4 hour nightmare.

It's not a competition. It doesn't matter if somebody else makes something really cool so long as YOU make something really cool.
