Just saw pic related in a /v/ thread and it made me wonder, what's the logic here?
There are 4 tones of shading here, a normal one, a shadow one and a darker shadow one. There's a extra light tone but it's only used on some metallic parts and the hair.
Here I'm specifically wondering about how the "darkest shadow' works. It's present at the right of his hair and face, but not at the right of his arms. It appears at the right of his right glove and a tiny bit on his left glove knuckle.
When are you supposed and not supposed to add them? I know a little bit of randomness is applied at times, but I still fail to fully grasp the reason why and when you should put an additional layer of shadow. Is it to show depth and volume somewhere that's already shaded when needed?
