early digital art has it's charms. the tools were quite simple.
even pros struggled with digital color. their traditional skills didn't transfer over right away. they were often just shaded with black or white instead of color shifting. lots of airbrush shading. some of the backgrounds are just simple default effects/filters.
some had 3DCG and SFX too, which was janky too.
they look a bit different when printed, you can see all the little dots from the print screening effect.

his artbooks are decent, worth checking out.

It was soulful but it frankly wasnโ€™t that good. I think modern Yugioh art is just better.
MtG went in the other direction, the early art is godlike but the modern stuff is just awful.

There was a weird roughness to it that was strangely appealing. It was interesting. While I think Yu-Gi-Oh is a game that actually managed to consistently look mostly fantastic throughout it's history there is a certain magic and feel to it's old art that isn't there anymore.

A problem with YGO is that the artist credits aren't on the cards. There are some who are very distinctive and you can recognize them when you stumble on their other work, but many are just hidden. As fucked as MTG became at least they had the decency to put the art credits on the cards.

How many of the early Yugioh card illustrations did Takahashi do himself? I donโ€™t think they look too much like his manga art.
Anyway itโ€™s easy to separate technical skill from popularity / โ€œmaking itโ€, I donโ€™t even think this is controversial. Ryukishi07 created multiple beloved and iconic characters but he canโ€™t draw for shit.

And again you are the retard who cant read. making assumptions and distorting words. No, I don't trust /ic/ at all to tell what is appealing or not, but the point is some cards in a technical level may look off because like the other anon said, digital art was a new thing.
And don't be a hypocrite . You only call it genius because you know the art is linked to someone who made it. If some anon unknown posted his work here with the same level of skill you would call it beg or int and complain about the colors, light and whatever.

I grew up with it too. All the grade 3, 4 and 5 boys in my school had a deck and we would go over to each other'shouses after school to duel. But that's about it. A few older kids collected rae cards but nothing more. By the time I entered middle school, nobody was playing it. OP likes it so much because he's autistic. It's an autistic trait to still care about objects and things from their childood, like trains and legos.

but they're asking about the art specifically, not the physical cards themselves. and most people probably have *some* attachment to some media from their childhood; it's too simplistic to call it autism wholesale.

I think it's because the original cards had art that was supposed to be more similar to monsters brought to life from hieroglyphs and as the series moved further away from that the cards became more of an illustration. Look at this iconic card. Look at how flat it is

I'd be up for that if someone makes a discord for it. We'd need a design for the actual card though so if there's any graphic designers interested in TCG design that would be good.

Anons could even create OC's based on the world and get a little story going if they wanted to which could contribute to some of the lore to underpin designs and whatnot.

It's the heavy use of darks, dirty shadows, less saturated colors and old anime artstyle
Of course there's also a difference in subjects, but I think that's the more important factor, since when they remake cards of old subjects they always look like shiny toys

It's because the internet puts you in competition with the best of the best. Just give it a decade when the world has embraced AI agents and skills have began to atrophy and (((they))) have begun to bump up the prices of AI tools because the world has grown dependent on them. People who have continually grown their skillsets will become invaluable artisans since retards embraced AI without any critical thinking whatsoever.

If you've watched the show the original intent behind why the cards look the way they do was clear and the unifying theme was strong. It's a matter of artistic vision vs what sells not of good or bad.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking. The only issue is that I think designing spell cards would be the funnest part and to do that we would need rules.
